Can one go to hell for venial sins?

  1. One does not have to call it a “moral sin” for it to be such…via natural law…reason etc persons can know certain things are very bad…
  2. A person in the state of grace who has venial sin …will need to be purified of that sin…either before they die or after…before heaven.
  3. We are saved by Jesus Christ…entering the state of grace by faith and baptism…and remaining living in Christ (or by the grace of Confession etc returning if such is lost) Now God can take into account those who through no fault of their own do know come to know Christ and his Church…and God is not bound by the Sacraments he can come with his grace in ways we do not know…but it is still Jesus Christ who saves those who are saved…

Your welcome

I would add though that yes God does judge us according to our lights and what we can know or not…and it can be the case that a person can commit what is a grave matter but it be not mortal via lack of knowledge or consent…

No a Baptized person in the state of grace…can not go to hell for a venial sin.

Though they can at times dispose one towards mortal sin…
WRONG!!!

James 2:10
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

The Bible says no sin can enter into Heaven.

Revelation 21:27
And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Psalm 5:4-5
4For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
5The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

So how do we get into Heaven???

There has to be a death payment made for sin.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus made that death payment.

Romans 5:8
But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

All we have to do is accept the payment Jesus made.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 6:47
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

1 John 5:13
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

John 1:12
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Romans 10:13
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Not by works
Romans 3:28
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Eph 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Philippians 3:9
And be found in him,** not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law**, but that **which is through the faith **of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith

Romans 4:5
**But to him that worketh not, but believeth **on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

I was completely correct. You are mistaking the question and the answer Here. We are not discussing initial justification via faith and baptism or any question of faith and works of the Torah …

As regarding venial sin …as I noted a person in the state of grace with venial sins on their conscience do not go to hell.

Catechism of the Catholic Church:

1863 Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul’s progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not set us in direct opposition to the will and friendship of God; it does not break the covenant with God. With God’s grace it is humanly reparable. “Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness.”

As to Faith and Works in Paul…this is good reading:

as to nothing unclean entering into heaven…yes of course God would first purify them.

Scripture certainly will emphasize certain aspects at different times but it is important that Christian life not be reduced to one aspect or another…we need to take it as a whole as the Church reads it and teaches and take care of course to read it within the Church…and also recall that certain things can be rather difficult to understand (2 Peter even notes that some have twisted Pauls writings in a not good way…)

Yes we need to have Faith…and be Baptized …and we need to remain in Christ (hence not die in mortal sin…away from life in him)…and we are to live in him…walk in him …following him in living charity.

You have not quoted one Bible verse to back you up.
The Bible says Salvation is by faith alone. If we have to be Baptized, that would add works into it.

You aren’t seriously Catholic, are you? Come on now…

Lets play beat each other over the head with bible verses, shall we?

"Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. (Matthew 7:21)

Your not here reading Paul and the Bible…as such was meant to be read and understood.

Baptism is all over the place in the New Testament (and in some of the most wonderful passages on it are in Paul)

read the my post again and the links there in. They will be helpful (and the get into what Paul means)

As will this: cin.org/users/james/files/work-law.htm

As to Baptism this will be of help: cin.org/users/james/questions/q021.htm

(the above are some older writings of the Jimmy Akin of Catholic Answers)

and this thread is not on this subject…we are not to derail threads.

Wrong on both counts. Do you wish to come out and disclose which branch of Protestantism you are part of?

If one is unrepentant of a venial sin, can they go to hell?
No, unless they thought the venial sin was mortal at the time of committing it or did it out of contempt of the moral law, which in the case it would actually be a mortal sin.

They’d probably end up in purgatory, though.
