Can one lie to oneself?

Naturally.

I will provide an example.

Boy meets girl.

Boy says, “I love the girl.”

Boy knows he loves the feeling of being love, not the girl herself.

Yet, boy continues to insist that he loves the girl, because letting go of the affectionate feelings is too painful.

Boy suppresses his knowledge, and conforms his behavior to mimick true love.

Boy and girl become unhappy.

Boy has lied to himself.

I think we do this all the time. We do something wrong and sinful but we try to rationalize it into something good.

We definitely can lie to ourselves. In fact I would say that believing otherwise would be lying to ourselves about lying to ourselves…
