Can one person offer up the sufferings of another person for that person’s spiritual good? I have St. Gertrude (somewhere in her book) and a holy Hermit Sister saying that it can and should be done and I have two Catholic men that I associate with say that is like stealing from that other person and that their free will needs to be involved.

Help me out please. The one guy will only believe it if it comes from an Apologist on Catholic Answers or the Pope. Hopefully I won’t have to go to the Pope 🙂

Hi,

I’m afraid not. Only the person himself has the use of his own free will. No one else has access to it. But we can certainly offer our own suffering for the benefit of others. This is quite praiseworthy.
