Can one rosary do double (or triple) duty?

I was wondering… if I agree to say a rosary every day for some particular thing, like the Rosary Confraternity or the Legion of Mary, can I also add other intentions to it? Can one rosary daily fulfill the promises to the Rosary Confraternity AND the Legion of Mary?

And, how about any indulgences? To get a partial or plenary indulgence, does one have to say a separate rosary with the intention of gaining the indulgence? Or can that be “folded” into the rosary already being said for some other reason?

Not to mention my own, personal, intentions…

I sure hope so! When I pray my Rosary, the list of intentions is usually long! I have to pray for me, my husband, my son and wife, souls in Purgatory, the sick, my workers and their families, my Lightweigh group and their families, my daughter in law’s pagan friends, etc. etc.

As far as the Legion Of Mary is concerned, yes. From their website…

Auxiliary membership in the Legion of Mary is open to priests, religious and the laity. Auxiliary members do not undertake the active apostolate of weekly meetings and weekly two hour assignment. Auxiliary membership is subdivided into two degrees:

the primary, whose members shall be simply styled auxiliaries; and
the higher, whose members shall be more particularly designated Adjutores Legionis or Adjutorians.

Auxiliary service consists in the daily recitation of the prayers comprised in the tessera, namely; the invocation and prayer of the Holy Spirit; five decades of the rosary and the invocations which follow them; the Catena; and the prayers described as “concluding prayers”. Persons who are already saying a daily rosary for any intention whatsoever may become auxiliaries without obligation to say an additional rosary

And, yes, I was a member of the Rosary Confraternity before joining the Legion as an Auxilliary, so my rosary does double-duty. Followed by the Catena and the concluding prayers.

That’s a relief!

I don’t know why my little mind works that way, but I wonder if I’m supposed to give an entire rosary over to various “big” intentions, etc. Part of it is down to hearing people say that they’ve dedicated one decade to a specific intention, which gets me to thinking that the prayer is like a pie that can be split five ways or something stupid like that…

I’ve always had a problem with the idea that God should be prayed to, like some sort of god-vending machine. X number of prayers in, gets desire.

I think this is a silly way to pray.

True prayer, should bring us closer to God and to love him more deeply, because He is God, and deserves nothing less. In this love, we place all of our trust in Him. He will provide for us when we ask, and not base it on the number of prayers we’ve recited.

I say one Rosary a day… for multiple intentions. I have several regular, daily intentions (family, deceased loved ones, etc.) and then, I choose one special intention for a particular day (Ex: I pray for the intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict… on Sunday… an end to Abortion on Friday… and so on). I like to write them down, on little file cards… and place them at the feet of a statue of Jesus. In this way, I can read them (I need lots of visual aids ) … and readily remember my intentions. This is where I am also. Certainly more prayer never hurt, but I don’t think we need to be concerned with keeping a specific count of our prayers for certain intentions. The more important thing is to pray ferverently and to pray as often and consistently as possible.
