Can only the priest talk during the homily?

By definition, the readings of the day are not a homily. The mere fact that it is the priest whose vocal chords are moving does not magically transform any sounds coming out into a homily. Since there is no allowance given for redoing the readings during the time allotted for the homily, and since “no person, even if he be a priest,” etc., the conclusion is obvious – if you are thinking with the mind of the Church, that is. Why do people think they can insist on ignoring what the Church prefers in order to add their own little extras to make the Mass more “meaningful” for people?

I will admit my own ignorance of the EF here, but isn’t there an indult or something for this?

Oh, I’m talking about the OF, in a case, for instance, in which perhaps someone decides to chant the readings in Latin and then repeat them in the vernacular during the homily.

Really, of course, what I’m doing is pointing out that “there’s no allowance for it” is the start, but rarely the end, of the inquiry.
