I keep hearing that only white people can be racist. Is that true?

Not at all. Did you see the articles about how African immigrants are being badly treated in China? I work at a university and I have seen how people from country A look down on people from country B. For example, the Chinese do not like the Japanese. Since we are flawed people, we have to fight against this kind of thinking but the idea that only white people are racist is not true at all.
Here is an example. When Kobe Bryant married his wife, his parents did not approve. His parents thought they were too young, but they also were not happy that Vanessa Bryant was not black (she is hispanic). After they had their first child, the Bryant’s softened and grew to love Vanessa but they didn’t at first.

People often say racism is a system of power therefore in our country minorities can’t be racist. It’s flawed as the dictionary offers three different definitions of racism, including a system of power but also simple bigotry against those of another race. So no, not only white people are racist.

Of course not. That’s insane. People who say that are just demonstrating how ignorant they are of history and the rest of the world. Anyone who has done any serious traveling can tell you that irrational dislike of other groups/ethnicities is far from unique to white people.

I would say it is worse when white people are racist because white people have been as a group the key-holders to better work opportunities, better education opportunities and so when the non white communities fail to succeed in society then it has to be said that white people may well take some of the blame at keeping the best opportunities to themselves. That being said all racism is wrong but from those with more, more is expected of them.

Racism is hating another based on their race. Anyone can be a racist. Social and economic status doesn’t make being a racist better or worse. A rich white man hating a poor black person is just as bad as a rich black person hating a poor white man. I’m so tired of the constant attempt to redefine words like marriage and racist. As soon as a group attempts to redefine a word they end up un-defining it.

I actually get frustrated with how, because I’m a white male, I’m automatically apparently against gay people, racist, sexist, and republican. Seriously?

I think there is a (legitimate) problem with racism in our country both consciously and unconsciously. I think people often have biases, and they can be tough to recognize, even for those well intentioned. But I also think we can unfortunately fall into the trap of scapegoating, siloing, or not addressing our own sinful nature which can perpetuate the problem rather than address it.

Anybody can be racist (not like other races).

However, there can be an issue where a particular race has a lot of the power in a country (owns the land, the businesses, majority in the government and media) and want to continue only sharing the power with people who look like themselves.

The minority can dislike them right back (also racism) but they have little recourse to change things in their favor.

At least my use/ interpretation is -

-put everyone into boxes (all men are this way, and all women are this way)
-put stereotypes on those boxes (men are big and awesome, women are small and weak)
-approach things from a defensive mindset ( I’m male and all those women are… and bad)
-etc.

So a sort of black and white us vs them. So if your a police officer you view all the police as our friends, and all the protesters as the same and “them”. I think this can be natural and common sometimes under stress or in difficult situations.

Yes it can be.

But not everybody in a category dislikes people from another category.

As I type this, there is a peaceful demonstration going on at the Quaker meetinghouse down the road from me.
All the participants are white.
They want to end racism.

I don’t consider this statement to be valid because it’s not universally a true statement. In China, Japan or Korea, this statement would be 100% the opposite of reality.

Racism is not objectively worse for one race over another.

Hate is hate.

This topic is mainly about racism in America and other English speaking nations where the white man has the upper hand and is in control of most institutions. Racism is always wrong but it is especially bad when it is perpetrated by white northern Europeans as that group as a whole is more privileged strictly speaking than other racial groups with a few exceptions, i believe that when a person has more, more is expected out of them and that includes showing respect to all other races and giving them opportunities to thrive. I don’t think America has done that to a great enough extent.
