My question is "Can prayers said for the dead help those who have already died obtain mercy and forgiveness at the final judgement even if they did not yet merit heaven at the moment they died? "
I ask this as I know that GOD does not exist in time as we know it thus He is not limited by it. He would know and hear our prayers even if we prayed for someone after the earthly time of their deaths. Perhaps our prayers would help them obtain the necessary graces to attain heaven and/or perhaps because of our prayers not yet said, the grace to call on our Lord for forgiveness at the moment of their deaths .
Unless I am mistaken, at this moment, the souls of the dead are awaiting the final judgement where we will all be judged together. At that point some will go to Heaven, Purgatory for purification or to the Eternal Fires of Hell. When people die the wait for judgement would seem instantaneous as they no longer exist in time as we know it, but in actuality they have a time lapse of some sort waiting for the final judgement that will happen at the end of the world after Jesus returns to judge the living and the dead. We live in that time lapse for those who have died before us as those who live after our deaths will live during our wait for judgement.
Macabees says “He then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.”
I don’t think that this contradicts my hope and may even support it.
I would appreciate hearing from the forum on this.
