at Mass this morning I noticed a lady with a small compact…a personal ciborium"…the priest put a host in it and also gave a host to the lady for communion. Is this a common practice now?

My assumption would be that she had a pyx. A pyx is a small container made of precious metal that is used to bring the Eucharist to shut-ins and the sick. It would appear that the woman received communion herself from the priest and was given a host to bring to a person who could not make it to Mass for reasons of health. Either she is a EMHC for the sick or has been “deputized” by the pastor as an EMHC for a particular individual (i.e. friend or family member).
