Can prayer alone save you?

I have two instances to relate to you:

I read about a saint who while in sin prayed to overcome it, and though he/she kept on repeating it, he/she finally overcame it.

I also read about St. Dominic Savio, when he was asked by St. Don Bosco in one of Don Bosco’s dreams “what gave you the greatest consolation at the hour of your death?”
Don Bosco: “purity?”
Savio: “Not that alone.”
Bosco: “A good conscience?”
Savio: “That’s a good thing, but it was not the greatest.”
Bosco: “Hope of glory in heaven?”
Savio: “Not even that.”
Bosco: “What then? Having stored up plenty of merit?”
Savio: “No.”
Bosco: “What please?”
Savio: “Assistance at death of the Mother of God. Tell that to the boys. Tell them to never forget to pray to her every day of their lives!”

In both of these cases, prayer is a means of seeking God. It is God, not the prayer “alone”, who saves. We are in relationship with Him. Even when we ask the intercession of Our Lady, it is God whom we seek, God who answers prayer.
