Remember that God is outside of time and God receives your prayers in the same way. So, there really isn’t a time when well intentioned prayers are not appropriate, regardless of what perceived state “in time” a soul appears to be in to us here on Earth. All things are possible with God.
God hears all prayers. None are wasted. We believe that when we die we will go to heaven if we lived our lives the best way we know how according to God’s law. I am one person who does pray to or ask help from my Dad and others who have died and who helped me during life. Those who have died are more closely united with us now through the Holy Spirit than when they were on earth. Just because they are in heaven or on the way there doesn’t mean they can’t help us now. We are the Communion of Saints and that includes those on earth who are trying to live the way God wants us to; the souls in purgatory and those who are in heaven. We can pray for and help each other no matter where we are right now.
