Can pride be a venial sin?

I may deal with pride here and there, but it’s not something I will go out of a ledge and say I’m better than you.

It mainly deals with theological discussions. I may assert something here and there, that may or may not be prideful.

And I was wondering if pride could be venial? I’m not sure of any instance where I committed a mortal act of pride.

Can someone give me any examples of a Venial act of pride and a Mortal act of pride.

Anytime that we put ourselves above or before God we are showing pride. It is not limited only to being boastful. Pride is a sin of self-love. Ultimately, just about any sin can boil down to pride the sin was done for self.

Thanks Boulder! I didn’t know pride encompassed all of the sins! Wow!

But I was wondering, can it be venial or only mortal?

I know, sometimes I would not pray daily, so that would be a pride of sloth and pride. Would that be Mortal, or a venial sin? I confess pride almost every time in confession, sometimes I may forgot though. (But I know its forgiven.)

How do I stop myself from pride?
I pray everyday now. It may be from 5-10 minutes a day, but I do pray daily for whatever has been troubling me or what needs to be prayed.

Those are great questions.

Prideful sins can certainly be venial or mortal. It is really important to remember that ultimately, everything boils down to pride. When we have an unhealthy pre-occupation with ourselves we are commiting a sin of pride. Pride is really more a condition, behavior, or attitude. So, I could say that intentionally missing Mass on Sunday to go fishing is a sin of pride because you put your own personal preference/pleasure before your commitment to God. Since missing Mass on Sunday constitutes grave matter and the choice was made willingly, this would constitute a mortal sin in many cases. Abortion could be a sin of pride because a person is willing to sacrifice a human life over their own intentions. Again, this would constitute grave matter and, if the choice was made willingly and freely, could constitute a mortal sin.

The same applies to venial sins as well. For instance, you see a homeless person and say in your head “filthy hobo.” That would certainly be a prideful sin. It may not constitute grave matter, but it is a prideful and sinful though.

I hope this helps to shed some light on it. You can’t really make a list of “prideful” sins, because ultimately, they all are
