Does the Church believe in the Holy Spirit guiding priests to speak about a particular subject or life matter? Do priests use the holy spirit to guide them during the Mass even though the mass is always preplanned? If the priest is limited in to what the Holy Spirit may move him to say will this make God proud that he is conforming to say the priest is only a follower of humans and not as God’s shepard?

Dear W,

Nothing can equal in importance what the priest is doing when he offers the sacrifice of the Mass. To be drawn away from that would NOT be the work of the Holy Spirit. No one uses the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit uses us. In this instance, the Holy Spirit is one with what is happening on the altar. The Mass is Our Lord’s way of making His passion and death (which transcend time) available to us in a concrete way in our midst. It is the SUPREME prayer because it is His prayer to the Father.

Good Friday is God’s ultimate self-revelation. Our appreciation of this fact is the Holy Spirit’s greatest gift to us. It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to recognize the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It doesn’t get better than this!
