Some have noticed that when the Pope was here certain “pro-abortion Catholic politicians” received the Eucharist. Why? What does this mean? See, ncrcafe.org/node/1749.
Here is another, more recent document, which was released last year:
Cardinal McCarrick basicly decided option B for the Archdiocese of Washington because he was against stopping someone at the communion line. His successor, Archbishop Wuerl hasn’t changed this.During the Kerry campaign, this became a hot subject. I believe each bishop was able to decide how their diocese would handle it:
a) refuse it
b) give them the benefit of the doubt (that they have repented) and let them receive communion
c) let each priest decide for themselves how to handle each individual communicant.
Rudy Guiliani received as well.FWIW, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy all received the Eucharist last week while attending one of the Papal Masses. I’m sure there were more who recieved. Again, very sad.
VATICAN CITY (CNS) – In a recent memorandum, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger laid out the principles under which bishops or other ministers may deny Communion to Catholic politicians who consistently promote legal abortion.
The Bishops see a difference from politicians, who vote to keep government out of abortion issues, and those who sponsor bills to help provide abortions. One candidate, who I can’t name, at one time went to the UN’s Cairo-5 summit, and threatened to withhold US funds to poor nations, who did not allow abortion. This candidate, is what then Cardinal Ratzinger was speaking about. At the same time, he said it is not necessarily sinful for Catholics to vote for politicians who support abortion, as long as they are voting for that candidate for other reasons.
