Can religious articles in poor condition be thrown away?

Thanks for the opportunity to ask this question. I like to have religious pictures or objects around me for reminders but have wondered about what to do with them when they wear out, break, are damaged, or the year passes and the calendar with religious pictures is still taking up space. Is it disrespectful to just throw them away? Is there a special way of disposing of them? I am doing some housecleaning and appreciate your advice. It is maybe a small matter but has given me some uncomfortable moments and also made me reluctant to buy any of these items lately.
