Can saints answer prayers?

I am reading Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light and she makes reference to Saint Therese of Lisieux answering a prayer for her: “The little Flower (Saint Therese Lisieux) is wonderful how she answers prayers. I had asked her to let me have just a few lines from you on her 50th year of her entrance into Heaven, and sure enough it did come” (a letter from Mother Teresa to the Archbishop Perier, page 84-95) I understand that we pray to the saints to ask them to intercede on our behalf but I thought that only God can answer our prayers. Othwise, we wouldn’t need to ask saints to intercede for us; we could pray directly to the saints if they could answer our prayers.
