Since Satan is an angel, albeit a fallen one. Can he perform what appear to be to our eyes miracles in order to deceive people? for example, could Satan heal a person or raise the dead or cure illness. This honestly scares me because when people talk about miracles, I wonder if Satan is behind some of them.

Satan can, and does, deceive people. We are warned of his work. We are to watch out for “wolves in sheep skins.” That is, those who pretend they are believers in order to do harm. Actually, these people may be deceived themselves. He is “a liar and the father of lies.” He can’t do miracles like Jesus can, but he can imitate them quite well.

Yup.

When I was younger this fellow came to our church (we attended a non-denominational church at the time, it had just started). He stood up in the middle of the service and started babbling. Another person stood up and started translating. He prophesied that our church would grow and would become a great beacon of light for God.

I remember, while he was babbling, that I just felt really confused and scared. I hadn’t been exposed to ‘speaking in tongues’ before. He seemed crazy. Just crazy. Point blank.

The person ‘translating’ for him was a member of our church.

Anyway. In less then a year the church closed down. All the members left and now there is absolutely no sign of it ‘anywhere’.

Now speaking in tongues is hardly a ‘miracle’ and I don’t know if it was ‘Satan’ moving through that man or if he was just making things up as he went along but… don’t be easily fooled by ‘signs’ and ‘wonders’. You never know what’s truly from God and what isn’t and your ‘feelings’ won’t always be an accurate gauge.

🙂

There is talk in the bible of this sort of thing - the enemy being able to send emissaries who behave in all respects like angels performing miracles - and will be believed to be angels and messengers of God by many people.

It’s actually a dreadful prospect - the enemy could sway with miracles and proof all of the people who are very against religion or who practice false religions, as well as many of the faithful.

You’d have no chance of pointing out the possibility of it being deceit. None.

He can heal people but that is the limit of his power on earth. Only God as power over death

Indeed, Satan deceives people. Look at all the fake apparitions. Especially the high profile one currently being investigated by the Vatican

I like to ask one more question with regard to the OP’s original question: can Satan answer a prayer to God if it spoken aloud?

Much Peace!

Mike 🙂

But, if it gives glory to God, would Satat want to answer a prayer to God, even if spoken aloud? :)🙂

I remember seeing news reports years ago about statues of Ganesha in India that started drinking milk that was offered to them, so yes, Satan has that kind of ability (though only through God’s allowance of it).

I think it’s important to acknowledge that Satan can only intervene in peoples lives physicaly when God alows it.

I think he can perform miracles and even appeared as holy figures to many saints (Eg. Padre Pio I believe) in order to deceive them! But when we have God by our sides we can easily tell the voice of the devil from the voice of something holy, it’s just a case of not getting too awestruck at the idea of something supernatural happening as many things can happen that seem like miracles but must be seen in the right light!

So does that mean Satan can cure someone of an illness even if they don’t directly pray to him? I sure hope not. But i’ve heard Satan can twist our prayers and make them work against us. So maybe he could heal us, but make us into an emissary for him. Not exactly a pleasant thought.

Yes. Think of some of the miracles performed by other religions. Scientology is credited with curing allergies and mental disorders in exchange for joining their auditing sessions. Some people credit mediums and tarot/palm readers with giving them advice that led to wealth or love. Neither invoke Satan directly, but each involve power that is decidedly non-Christian.

But what if i’m just in the hospital and praying to God. God doesn’t intervene for whatever reason. Could Satan intervene even if i’m not even considering him and i’m praying to God but he doesn’t see fit to answer at that moment?

Did’t St. Paul warn about evil spirits appearing as “spirits of light”?

The only reason a fallen angel (be it Satan or someone else, there are a lot) would interfere with someone’s body is to draw him towards eternal damnation.

In fact, it would be especially proper of the work of the adversary to step in when God, in His fatherly love and wisdom, is not granting us exactly what we are asking for (though God always answers our prayers with a superabundance of graces). However, if you are not well and praying to the Lord for health and you start feeling better, that’s hardly the work of an enemy, since you feel grateful towards God 🙂

Mind you, I think it is quite rare that the fallen angels can interfere so openly with out body. Temptations are a different matter. Regardless of whether they are from an enemy or from our fallen nature, temptations (be it through motions of the souls, feelings, etc.) always leave us exhalted above measure, proud, and away from the Lord. Motions from the Lord usually fill us of love and thanksgiving, and make us feel humble - even full of joy, but humble.

As others have mentioned, the work of the creature known as Satan hits a wall when it approaches man. True, the ancient enemy did gain some level of authority over human beings due to Original Sin, but the victory of Christ, the sanctifying grace we receive in Baptism and that is restored, when lost, through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, is such that we are delivered from the spiritual slavery of sin and we can say with the Apostle: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” - the same Christ who said once: “here comes the prince of this world. He has no power over me.” Keep that in mind if you are ever worried about the fallen angels, for the state of grace is an unbreakable shield around your soul, the shield of the Holy Spirit. As my own rule of thumb, I always despise and ignore the thought of the adversary. I don’t deny him or his work - as many unfortunately do - but I don’t focus on him either. Am I being tempted? I don’t get angry at Satan, I call to Christ for help and offer Him through Our Lady everything I am feeling. Am I frightened? I do not think of the presence of Satan, but of the presence of that guardian angel who has been by my side even before I was born, and who sees the face of God.

For ultimately there are many creatures, all created good, some of which bear good fruits, other bad fruits, but they are finite and imperfect…yet, in God we live, and move, and have our being, and as He said to the prophet Isaiah:
this is what the high and lofty One says–he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
“I live in a high and holy place,
but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
May Our Lady cover you with her mantle, just as she covered her divine child during times of cold wind and rain.

As an example…Satan was allowed to test Job in the Old Covenant times. And, major harm & death resulted …from Satan, but it would appear ONLY in this one case. Satan had God’s permission in this one case, to test the righteous Job.

Would God still allow under New Covenant rules ( grace & Paraclete protection) ??
