Can science REALLY explain Reality?

The quantity of matter in the universe does not explain why the laws of nature are constant and predictable - unless you can produce an explanation.
Do you know anything about the idea of previous universes? I believe it is different than the multiverse theory. I am still young on this area so forgive me, but as I understand it now, the reason we exist is because stars get big enough in which they produce the heavier elements necessary for life. Prior to this, the laws of these previous universes could have been much different, until “harmony from chaos” came to be.
How did the rules originate?
I do not understand why they have to originate from somewhere?
I left 4 blank because I am a believer in that we are the only complex life in the universe. Simple life may exist, but the conditions to which life evolved on Earth had many factors. However, if there are other planets in the habital zone with a “moon to planet” ratio the same as Earth, then I would be willing to possibly accept possible complex life. I believe this ratio had profound impact on life’s development here on Earth. Who knows, maybe the moons gravitational pull on water plays a part in explaining height of living creatures… haha 😛
discussion of evolution is banned, even though I have been dying to discuss this with you for quite some time.
If our thoughts are not our own and merely electrical impulses there is no obvious reason why they should provide insight into reality. Since computers don’t know what they are doing, why should biological computers be different?
How do you define insight and reality? They are your own thoughts in the sense that it is the “I” that is trying to organize and interpret.
You are assuming “the first components” are material objects yet the mind is superior because it knows it exists and can control material objects.
I don’t believe I ever stated that first components are based on material objects. If I did, my apologies and hopefully I can explain differently. Before the mind could cognitively recognize night and day, sky from ground, land from water, and other living organisms, self awareness needed to be obtain. What are the building blocks that lead to self awareness? I know you and I have had this discussion before, so once again, I am purposing to you the “Stoned Ape Theory.” I am not saying this is answer, but it is a possibility. The use of drugs (used loosely) and the use of other natural hallucinogens in ancient human history should not be ignored.
Personally, I do not like the word morality. I would have used ethics.
The highest form of love is far more than an attachment. It is based on the power to choose to sacrifice oneself for another person.
How do you define love?

and sorry I type in word. I don’t know why it doesn’t use the default text

Inocente:

If Tonyrey will permit me, I’d like to be recorded as the first to disagree with all that you have written, including the subtle intention behind your “1,2,3 . . .” answer. 😉
With great pleasure! 😉

Despite speculation there is no obvious scientific reason why the laws of nature have remained constant for billions of years and science itself is based on the principle that they will continue to do so,

Science is based on the principle of causality.

The question is about the factors that initiated development not development itself.

Insight is the power of understanding. Reality is that which exists objectively. All thoughts are subjective and without them rational discussion is not possible.

The highest form of love is far more than an attachment. It is based on the power to choose to sacrifice oneself for another person.
How do you define love?

Unselfish concern, action and self-sacrifice if necessary for the well-being of others.

  1. These statements are based on the unsubstantiated assumption that natural phenomena are the **sole **phenomena despite the fact that rational beings transcend natural phenomena by their insight and control of natural phenomena.
Transcend? Um, have you noticed how we’ve worked out how to control the weather? Me neither. And the exertion of control does not entail transcendence. Humans have historically worked out how to control other animals, and other humans too, by manipulation of entirely natural circumstances.
  1. Without minds we wouldn’t even be aware that matter exists.
We might not be in a position to say or understand that it is “matter”, as opposed to “energy”, but awareness, as such, only requires sensory structures, which even single-celled bacteria possess.
  1. The power of the mind is sufficient evidence that it is not derived from matter.
By whose reckoning?
  1. Calculations of probability are not associated with purposeless particles but with rational beings.
Which ultimately has nothing to do with the argument from probability. It doesn’t matter that we (or some of us, at least) have the ability to make probabalistic calculations and to grasp their implications - that affects the actual state of affairs not a bit.
Argumentum ad hominem.
You were the one who made the accusation of desperation in the first place - did you only do so in order to set up an opportunity to trot out your favourite phrase?
  1. The unsubstantiated assumption that scientists are in principle capable of explaining everything is falsified by Godel’s incompleteness theorem since it implies they can explain themselves.
In principle, scientists are capable of explaining everything to which we have experiential access. If it’s detectable, it’s examinable. Bear in mind that scientific explanations are only required to account for reality as we experience it - if there is some aspect of reality that we cannot detect or experience, even remotely, it has no effect upon us and is therefore irrelevant to our existence.
  1. That objection betrays a particular ontological view of the world - a **bottom-up (!) **notion that phenomena such as “autonomy”, “morality” and “love” are merely human ideas that don’t correspond to material reality.
Of course they correspond with material reality - that is the whole point. You are the one claiming they don’t have a material existence.
  1. The unsubstantiated assumption that matter is **necessarily **orderly overlooks the fact that this universe is not the only possible universe.
Actually, I thought the multiverse hypothesis kind of had that covered. As far as the claim that matter is orderly is concerned, again, perspective is important - it is one thing to say that matter behaves in predictable, patterned ways; it’s quite another to claim that it reflects an externally imposed order.
  1. There is no rational basis for the assumption that every event is due to physical necessity.
What you seem to mean by a “rational basis” is a predetermined reason to suppose that some state of affairs is the case. On the other hand, when scientific investigation turns up the fact that every phenomenon we have thus far been able to detect is explicable in physical terms, it seems rather pointless to simply assume supernatural explanations.
  1. Matter and energy are certainly brute facts from a materialist’s point of view but materialism is a discredited hypothesis due to its dependence on the verifiability principle.
You seem to have missed the point of my comment - whenever a god is posited as the ultimate explanation for any phenomena, there is never any accompanying explanation of how or why a god exists; yet when supernaturalists say, “You can’t just say matter exists without explaining where it comes from!!” they seem to overlook the fact that their hypothesis actually assumes far more, as a starting position, than simple matter and energy.
  1. Your matter and energy are certainly brute facts from a materialist’s point of view but **your **materialism is a discredited hypothesis due to its dependence on the verifiability principle.
Perhaps it’s fair to say that science cannot falsify the necessity for hypotheses to be falsifiable; but this accusation loses its sting when it comes from those whose ultimate hypothesis depends upon blind faith.
(Indications of needless discourtesy which reveals an aggressive hostility towards religion, infringes the forum conduct rules and is evident in other of your posts.)
Luckily for you, we’re on a Catholic forum. If the discourtesy rules were more generally applied, well…
  1. Blind faith in the power of science to explain every detail of life in terms of inanimate molecules fails to recognise that information systems such as DNA presuppose intelligence.
Actually, they don’t - they merely rely upon means of generating and reading the information. This can be done in the absence of any metacognition - the generators and readers don’t have to comprehend what they are doing.
  1. “rattling off” the list of what scientists as if to add at the end, “Therefore, matter” is no help to anyone seeking a rational explanation.
Naturalists don’t have to say, “therefore,” matter - the matter is there to be investigated. The difference is that the scientific approach is open-ended regarding conclusions, whilst the religious approach tries to make any and all data fit the predetermined conclusions set down by scriptures.
  1. A superb example of hyperdogmatic materialism.
Actually, a response to the failure of religious dogma to reflect experienced reality; not to mention an example of a hyperbolic reaction to any and all criticism of religious faith…
  1. Science is certainly used by materialists as a stop-gap measure to compensate for their ignorance but it does not help people to deal with their **personal **affairs in the real world.
So you’d prefer to interpret your experience on the basis of mythology than on scientific research? That is your prerogative, after all…
  1. Materialists - as on this thread - invent myths and dogmas about the power of science and fill the gaps in our knowledge with idle speculation and unfalsifiable assertions about what science will discover, but when it comes to daily life they act on the assumption that life has value, meaning and purpose and - in most cases but not all - treat others as persons rather than naked apes.
The fact that we consider ourselves and others to have value has never been demonstrated to be a product of supernatural infusion; but thus far the empirical explanations from biological, psychological, anthropological and sociological fields have provided a great deal of insight that goes far beyond the supposed dictates of mythological entities.
  1. The items in the list are closed questions as far as materialists are concerned and they thereby eliminate the possibility of discovering truths about **their spiritual development - **which is undoubtedly a cause for compassion on the part of those who believe persons are not merely naked apes…
How are they closed questions when research is still under way?

If spiritual development, whatever that may be, is open to detection, then it is open to research. What’s more, the understanding of ourselves as animals within a natural universe - as naked apes - is more conducive to compassion than the supposition that we are obliged by our “creator” to live up to a perfect (read impossible) standard.

I just saw a great video on control and thoughts. And how perceptions/beliefs actually control our behavior.

It’s by a cellular biologist who was cloning human muscle cells and studying how individual cells became healthy, distressed, etc.

It’s slightly over an hour, but one of the better hours I’ve spent recently. It really gave me a boost to help understand some high school biology that I knew at the time but didn’t really understand – like how proteins and MRNA work. It also gave a small boost to my faith that as I continue to grow in spiritual, mental, and emotional health, more of my physical symptoms will improve.

Biology of Belief - by Bruce Lipton (full documentary)

And we think we are basically walking brains/control centers. It’s actually much more complicated and more wonderful.

I see you resolved the technical difficulties surrounding your signature. Nice one! So’s the statement of your religious affiliation.

Thanks for the link. Will watch it when the troops troop off to work and I have a bit of time.

Or, there’s another possibility, (wait for it!) perhaps there’s no God at all!
No, not possible. My take is 1 Cor 1:18-31, perhaps the exact opposite of the average Catholic on CAF - it’s foolish looking for signs of God (miracles, ID, etc.) and foolish trying for wisdom about God (proofs of his existence, etc.) when God was in us all along.
Yes: the old Samuel Johnson approach to reality. Yet, what is pain?
So, the doctor says to me: “You are not suffering any pain. Pain consists in the firing of certain neurons, and those neurons are not firing.” - Robert Spaemann’s, Rationality and Faith in God.
Prove pain.
Not sure but it sounds like Spaeman is thinking he is separate from his nervous system, while in my book he is the neurons, what he experiences is the neurons firing.

What definition did y’all give “reality?”
Julia Mae,

I do not see that this question has in any way been answered. Most of what I read on this post is based on what people think or see or want to explain. I want to impose the notion of Alfred Korzybski, from Science and Sanity…

The map is not the territory

So here is what I want to ask for clarification. What are people calling Reality.

I believe that what is being discussed is the outside world and universe as we see and experience it. Is this the Reality in question.

I ask for those that have responded to state what it is you are calling Reality in the context of this discussion so that clarity can be provided.

What does that prove? Apart from the fact that anthropology is alive and well…
It makes us ask questions about what it means to say the universe can be explained - perhaps we can explain it to ourselves, but would a super intelligent alien nod sagely or think we’re fooling ourselves, how can we know?
It is unscientific to believe life elsewhere **must **have something in common with life on this planet.
Agreed.
Blind faith in the power of science to explain everything - even God - again rears its ugly head but provides plenty of fodder for science fiction fanatics… :):):):):takeoff:
Hyprbole, as if neuroscience is trying to explain God.
What’s in a word? Ah! The marvellous solution to every conceivable problem for those who are determined to make religion redundant at all costs and conveniently relieve them of all their obligations by making morality a human invention and reducing men to magnificent machines completely incapable of controlling either their thoughts or actions, of deciding what is good or evil or of reaching valid conclusions about what they are, how they exist and why they ever had the monstrous misfortune to be born as impotent cogs turned relentlessly by their inscrutable mistress: the blind Goddess…
That was like waiting for the verb in German :), but I think you’ve mistakenly entered the realms of conspiracy theorists here, quick do a U-turn before they start telling us about how Elvis is living in Cleveland.

Inocente:

"7 The presiding elder has to be irreproachable since he is God’s representative: never arrogant or hot-tempered, nor a heavy drinker or violent, nor avaricious;

8 but hospitable and a lover of goodness; sensible, upright, devout and self-controlled;

9 and he must have a firm grasp of the unchanging message of the tradition, so that he can be counted on both for giving encouragement in sound doctrine and for refuting those who argue against it." - Titus, I, 9.

You and I both know about pretenders to wisdom. In those things that I am not knowledgeable of, I think I try (however imperfectly) to shy away from. Many herein don’t - and that includes non-Catholics as well. Faith and wisdom are quite important aspects of a serious relationship with God, as opposed to a superficial relationship that can be turned away at the mere sound of quasi-righteous words.
Not sure but it sounds like Spaemann is thinking he is separate from his nervous system, while in my book he is the neurons, what he experiences is the neurons firing.
Actually, he is explaining ‘scientism’ and how it would place over-importance on observing neurons firing. We don’t observe neurons firing, but we can certainly sense the effects! He agrees with you that we are our composites.

There’s no mistake about the neuroscientists who are trying to explain the mind in terms of the brain thereby disposing of the supernatural department thereby eliminating God or relegating God to the subnatural basement where He can be safely ignored…

Is “regularities of nature” the same as “laws of nature?”

Environmental changes and pure luck that some organism could benefit?

New chemicals were released into the brain, which would create a different “aspect” of the mind. All I said was that it would have lead to self awareness. Rationality would be developed under different methods.
Its origin remains unexplained.
Primitive forms of religion? Divine authority shouldn’t have to be the reason human beings act “morally” living in larger groups. If humans kept killing and stealing from each other, it would be complete anarchy… and civilization would not have developed.

You, as a child of God made in His image and likeness, are a “chosen” one. There is no privilege in going through a door/adore open to anyone. Your refusal does not constitute my privilege.
