can you still enter seminary if you commited adultery such as masturbation?

Well, first of all, masturbation is not adultery. It is a sin against chastity as is adultery but it is not the same as adultery. That said, sinners enter seminaries all the time. Saint Augustine was well known to have lived a wild and unchaste life before he converted to Catholicism and eventually became a Bishop.

While priests need to strive, as all of us need to strive, to live chastely, priests like all of us have past sins in our lives, including sexual sin for some.

Of course! Your past sins do not prevent you from entering the priesthood as long as you have repented and are truly sorry.

HOWEVER, one considering the priesthood should overcome any attachment to sexual sin before entering the seminary. The Vocations Director for our diocese noted that someone applying to the seminary would have to be sexually sober for two years prior (he also noted a few slip-ups would probably be okay). I think its a diocesan policy, so one should check with their diocese to see, but bottom line, if you are struggling with this sin and are considering the priesthood, conquer the sin first, then enter the seminary.

If they can’t then we are in serious trouble because there will be no priests left at all.

While masturbation is a sin, I am willing to bet that at one time or another…probably as young teenagers in puberty…just about every man on the planet has maturbated…and most women too (although it is more taboo for a woman and almost expected of a man in our society)

Also, Adultry involves having intercourse with someone other then your spouse, and is in no way masturbation…unless your are thinking of the “anyone who looks at anothers wife with lust in his heart has already commited adultry with her” thing and then you masturbate while thinking of her…but I think that is a streatch

No kidding, seminaries would be empty. I have it on good authority that most men in seminary, and most priests even, have at one time or another in their life, sinned.

Fortunately, we have the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Got to love St. Augustine 😃

The priest who lead my high school youth group told us that masturbation was not a sin and that even he did it on occassion…it comes as no surprise that he is no longer a priest but has left, gotten married and has 2 girls now.

I often wondered if what he really wanted to say, but probably couldn’t say to a group of teenagers was that masturbation was a lesser of two evils when faced with premarital sex or self-gratification.
