hmm, well that is the most helpful explanation of enrollment ive heard yet. Most importantly it tells me that the priest should have the necessary prayers, and where he can find them. Now i just have to find a quality scapular at a reasonable price

Since you will be wearing it a lot I would spend at least a good amount of money (10 USD) because you don’t want something itchy that will give you a rash.

Looks nice. If you have a monastery around you, you could always go there as well.

unfortunatly i do not, despite being a spiritually an culturally rich diocese for diocesan things, the religious life in it is tiny at best.

To bad. I assume you live in the USA. Yes they are mostly in the south because of the Mexican influence. 🤷

I don’t think that I have any Monasteries around my area. But oh well. 😦 too bad.

The brown scapular includes the privilige that the wearer will not suffer eternal fire. The only requirement for this is that one faithfully wear the scapular. There is also a Sabbatine Privilige associated with the brown scapular that states that the Blessed Virgin will continue her intercession for the wearer, even after death and deliver one from purgatory on the Saturday following one’s death. The additional requirements for this is that the wearer observe chastity according to one’s state in life and pray the divine Office daily.
Ah… Once Saved Always Saved… Scapular Version.

A lot of people have denied the existence of this ‘Sabbatine Privilige’ including JPII (a Carmelite) in his letter to the OCD and O.Carm communities on the celebration of xxx years since the founding.

It’s not the Scapular that saves. It is the attitude of the person wearing the Scapular and their continued devotion to God.

Gee, I never heard all these rules,
Where I come from children are enrolled in the brown scapular at their first holy communion. The priest blesses the person and then they never need to have a scapular blessed. All I have been told to do is wear it constantly unless I am in the shower or swimming (if you wear it in the shower or swimming, it gets your shirt all wet when you put it on and if you think about monks and nuns, they don’t wear their scapular in the shower or swimming either.) The scapular is made of wool, so it itches a little which is just a constant little penance. You wear it with the wool facing in towards your body, and under your shirt.
If a woman is wearing a halter top or something, either drop it into your purse which you keep on you, or into your bra. That is normal. Men, when they take off their shirts, will usually keep it on, or some men will just leave it with their shirt.

It is really neat when non-Catholics come up when your scapular is accidentally showing, and they say, “Cool necklace, does it mean anything?” and then you can tell them about it. But don’t wear it outside your shirt because then it doesn’t itch you and then there is not penance. (My sister (a teen) breaks out where her scapular hangs. There is nothing she can do about it, so she just deals with it:shrug:).

Have a Wonder Full day!

The Church has actually denounced the statements that say you are saved for merely wearing one.

Your comments are misleading. You make it to sound as if Pope John Paul II was anti-scapular. That is not true. After the attempted assassination in 1981, he insisted that his brown scapular not be removed; he accredited his survival to his scapular. He encouraged others to wear the scapular, in his own words:
“Those who wear the Scapular are thus brought into the land of Carmel, so that they may “eat its fruits and its good things” (cf. Jer 2: 7), and experience the loving and motherly presence of Mary in their daily commitment to be clothed in Jesus Christ and to manifest him in their life for the good of the Church and the whole of humanity (cf. “Formula of Enrolment in the Scapular”, cit.).”

and:
"With the Letter that I wrote last 25th March to the Superiors General of the Order of the Carmelites and of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, I invited you to this special dedication. In it, among other items, I wrote that **the Scapular is essentially a habit which evokes the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary in this life and in the passage to the fullness of eternal glory **(emphasis added). The Scapular also reminds us that the devotion to her must become a “uniform”, that is a Christian life-style, woven of prayer and interior life. I hope that this anniversary may be for each one of you an occasion for personal conversion, for community renewal, in which we will respond to the divine grace which fortifies us on the path to holiness. not to shoot you down, but from what most sites say the brown scapular requires enrollment into the scapular confranternity. Do you have any source that says otherwise?
I came across this information stating that it is not necessary to “enroll” to receive the fruits of the scapular:
Is it necessary to be enrolled in the Scapular Confraternity in order to share in the spiritual benefits attached to the scapular?

No, those without formal affiliation with the Order, but who wear the scapular out of devotion and practice the Order’s spirituality, still share in a spiritual affiliation to the Carmelite Order. This gives them the assurances of the favors pertinent to this sacramental. Since the Brown Scapular is a habit of the Carmelite Order, the Order does encourage wearers to make some level of committment to the spirituality of the Order.

Any thoughts?

@jkarp:

I don’t know, most places I have seen do seem to say enrollment is necessary. Scapulars - Fish Eaters
Right and the EWTN article said that as well. That article references *The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Catechesis and Ritual, *prepared under the direction of the North American Provincials of the Carmelite Orders, 2000. Does anyone have a copy of this text?
