its kinda unfortunate that scapulars have died out like they have. First off, to me, it is an awesome devotional item. Secondly, there is so much conflicting information becuase they seem to be so widely unknown. Its almost frustrating trying to find what i need, or if i need, for enrollment and such

Look at it this way. It makes you more unique to have one.

Is there a specific design that must be on them. Or does it matter. What would be the most traditional design?

from what ive been reading the brown scapular of mount carmel just needs to be brown. Originally they were plain, but they commonly put pictures of different saints and what not on them

that would be fine. Plust i traced that back to the site, and it was wonderful. First, the scapulars were made right, as i expected since the sisters of Carmel make them. But it also gives the enrollment for the brown scapular on the site

I may get one after my Confirmation. Actually I think that I will. I forgot how long you must wear them for.

You wear it when you are sleeping, you wear it constantly except when you are going to get wet, like swimming, or showering.

The important thing for a brown scapular is that it is made of brown wool and you face the wool towards your skin.

You wear them from the time you are enrolled until you die and many people are buried with them on. If your scapular breaks, either burn it, or bury it and buy a new one.

Here are the words for the priest:
FORMULA OF ENROLLMENT AND BLESSING
FOR THE BROWN SCAPULAR OF OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL

Priest:
Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy.
All: And grant us Thy salvation.
Priest: O Lord, hear my prayer.
All: And let my cry come unto Thee.
Priest: The Lord be with you.
All: And with thy spirit.
Priest: Let us pray:
All: O Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of mankind, * by Thy right hand sanctify + these Scapulars (this Scapular) * which Thy servants will devoutly wear for the love of Thee * and of Thy Mother; the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt. Carmel; * so that, by her intercession, * they may be protected from the wickedness of the enemy and persevere in Thy grace until death; * Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.
The priest now sprinkles the Scapular with Holy Water, after which he places the Scapular on each one saying:
Priest: Receive this blessed Scapular and ask the Most Holy Virgin that, by her merits, it may be worn with no stain of sin and may protect you from all harm and bring you into everlasting life.
All: Amen.
Priest: May Almighty God,
All: Creator of heaven and earth, bless + you * whom He has been pleased to receive into the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. * We beg her to crush the head of the ancient serpent in the hour of your death, * and, in the end, to obtain for you a palm and the crown of your everlasting inheritance. * Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
*The priest now sprinkles those enrolled with Holy Water.

            **Practical information**
The Scapular encourages us to live as authentic Christians in line with the teaching of the Gospel, to receive the sacraments, to profess our special devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which should be expressed each day, at least by saying the Hail Mary.
To receive the full benefit of the scapular, the wearer should be enrolled in the scapular. People are enrolled in the scapular only once, by a priest.
It is a good idea to have your scapular blessed by a priest, but only the first scapular worn need be blessed. After that the blessing is carried on to all scapulars worn from then on.
Non-Catholics may wear the scapular, but only Catholics may be enrolled in the scapular. In fact Non-Catholics are encouraged to wear the scapular because of the great graces they will obtain.
The scapular must be made of cloth and worn over the shoulders by cloth or a cord or a chain. It may not be pinned or fastened to clothing as a replacement for wearing it over the shoulders. In necessary cases, such as in missions, the scapular medal may be worn instead. However, if the scapular medal is worn for insufficient reason, such as vanity or convenience, the wearer runs the risk of not receiving the benefit of the promise.

However couldn’t you strangle yourself if you wore it while sleeping. I never wear any type of necklace when sleeping.

Think of it this way, it could only strangle you if your wearing it, and think youve been promised salvation if you die wearing it:D

Here is another way to think of it, Would Our Lady let you die because you wore her shield? And if she did, wouldn’t it be your time?😉 When I first got mine, I took it off every night, but when my mom found out, she told me that she and all her 8 siblings, and my dad and most of his siblings had worn a scapular all their lives while they were sleeping, and it had never killed any of them, nor any person that my mom had ever known, so she said I was safe. She also said that Our Lady wouldn’t let me die from the very thing that was supposed to protect me.
Sometimes, when I have had an especially bad day, I will just hold onto it while I fall asleep, and it makes me feel very close to Our Lady.👍
