I don’t mean to sound suspicous, but it could well be the case that you were not being told all the details…When I was 15 we were at Mass and my aunt told me that I couldn’t take Communion because I was Protestant and she couldn’t take it because she was born out of wedlock.
When I was not going to confession or practicing my faith at all, if I went to a Catholic funeral or wedding I would not recieve either. If pressed why not, I would simply say “I ate just before I came here” (which would usually be true! even if just a mint!)
I never told anyone “well, I do X, Y & Z!”
Just a thought. But do try to clarify that being born outside of marriage is in fact NEVER an impediment.
