Can someone comment on the propriety of applause after Mass?

It has become quite common at our church for the whole congregation to applaud after mass. This bothers me because it seems to degrade the mass from a solemn event to an entertainment event. Is anyone else bothered by this? Can someone comment on the propriety of applause after mass?
