Can someone describe a worship service in a mosque?

He questioned Him, yes. He was upset by his apparent lack of success in reaching the people of Nineveh, so he left them [when he shouldn’t have]. He was then thrown off a boat and was swallowed by a fish. He repented, though, And God forgave him.

And remember Dhul-nun, when he departed in wrath: He imagined that We had no power over him! But he cried through the depths of darkness, ‘There is no god but thou: glory to thee: I was indeed wrong’. So We listened to him: and delivered him from distress: and thus do We deliver those who have faith.” (surah 21:87-88).

‘Dhul-nun’ just means ‘man of the fish’. It’s a title Allah gave to Jonah [peace be upon him]. There are other passages where he’s called by that name.
Fascinating!

Do you give credit to the book of Jonah as being entirely true or only partly true?

I’m not sure exactly how Muslims approach the Tanakh.

I don’t believe that any book of the Bible is completely true. I think it has some truth to it, though. The fact that the people of Nineveh all repented is something I’d give an ‘amen’ to. No other nation was universally accepting of its respective prophet. Nineveh was unique in that regard. The gourd plant sprouting out of the ground to give Jonah some shade is also something I accept. The Bible mentions that a worm ate the plant, but the Qur’an makes no mention of that worm.

Where the book of Jonah agrees with the Qur’an, I agree with it. Where it contradicts the Qur’an, I take the Qur’an over the book of Jonah. Where it neither agrees nor disagrees, I am silent.

I’ve heard that women are given the option of going, but I cannot confirm that. As for men, though, they don’t have an excuse.

“O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if ye but knew!” (Quran 62:9)
Verse clearly says work must be stopped “When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday” and that happens at midday. Before that and after the prayer service work is allowed. I have no idea from where in the verse you have reached the conclusion that working on Fridays is Forbidden.

Furthermore, the rules for Friday prayers differ amongst Shias and Sunnis. ‘Currently’ many Shia scholars state that attending the congregation Friday prayer is not compulsory…

The only day in which worldly work is discouraged (not forbidden) in Shia Islam is the day of Ashura, which marks the commemoration of the Martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), which is about 3-4 days from now.

The whole thing takes about 45 minutes. The sermon takes up the majority of the time. Shias have a different way of praying than sunnis do; they pray with their arms at their sides, where we [sunnis] pray with our hands folded at the navel. Shia leaders, in their congregations, will often curse the sahaba and Aisha, one of Muhammad’s wives [may Allah be pleased with her]. **The shia leaders who do that are dogs-- they’re not men. **

They also place their forehead on a small clay tablet when they go down to prostrate, whereas sunnis place our heads on the ground.
I take it you have never attended a Shia friday prayer. The Shia might curse the Sahaba for very valid reasons that I can discuss with you and prove for you if you want. But the cursing is not done in public (or during a Friday prayer) out of respect for the Sunnis who might feel insulted. And the curse they use simply means “may God not have Mercy on so and so.”

That’s not true. You’re not very good at making taqiyya. You shia don’t repsect sunnis to begin with, so don’t give me that bologna that you refrain from your cursing “for the sunnis who might feel insulted”. lol!

There is so much evidence to the contrary. You think I don’t know what your priests do behind closed doors when they talk about Aisha and Hafsa [may allah be pleased with them]?

It might be wise to remain charitable with one another. I didn’t mean for this to be a sunni vs. shia thread and if you are banned or suspended then you cannot participate here.

So please be charitable.
