Can someone explain to me Colossians 3:5-8?

Colossians 3:5-8

Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. Because of these the wrath of God is coming [upon the disobedient]. By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way. But now you must put them all away: anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths.”

Now does this deal with the the negative emotions we entertain in ourselves or does it reference to anything that is ‘angry’ and ‘fury’ and etc.

I ask this because if it were the latter, then it would imply many many many hollywood movies, even harry potter should be thrown away ?

Also what does it meany by ‘passion’

Note that the passage says “parts of you”.

I’m not sure what “passion” means; it could refer to lust, or it could mean any inordinately strong desire (which could lead to desiring some thing more than God).

We should not watch or read evil things - things that are offensive to God. They can serve as temptations and lead us away from God.

*Mt. 18:7-9 Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the man by whom the temptation comes! And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, …

Rom 16:17-18 I appeal to you, brethren, to take note of those who create dissensions and difficulties, in opposition to the doctrine you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering words they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded. *

We cannot destroy the property of others, but we can certainly examine our own property and destroy any books, videos, etc. that could lead us (or any visitors or other household members) to sin. Also, we have to examine which television shows are immoral and displeasing to God - and not watch them.
