I completed my training for EMHC and attended- not the required one- but two hands-on training sessions. Today was my first day on the alter and I was quite nervous–big Mass, lots of people. I prayed that the Holy Spirit would be with me and I would be worthy of my role in handling the precious body and blood of Jesus. I took my place and carefully passed out the Body of Christ by saying “Bread of Christ”!!! I am fairly certain that I said this to at least half of the people who came to me before I heard Father saying “Body of Christ” to the right of me!

We were trained to refer to the host as the Body of Christ and not bread in our training sessions. I was thinking about this as I went to the alter–perhaps it was in my head as a result.

I really feel like an idiot as I have been a Catholic all my life and have received communion thousands of times! I know better. I have been looking forward to today for a very long time and I just feel bad. I have not been inundated with calls or asked to leave the church ( just kidding ) nor was it even mentioned by anyone. I think I am punishing myself enough for everyone.

I don’t know why I am posting other than to get it off my chest. I will be much better next time. Not sure I even want to mention it to my trainer out of pure embarrassment.

Could have been worse. \once had my cellphone go off while I was reading the Epistle. After Father finished his sermon he looked at me and asked"was thast God calling you?"

As far a saying the wrong thing-I wouldnt worry about it. I am sure
after this experience you will never do it again!

Take comfort in knowing that it is also the Body of Christ just as the Host is the Body & Blood of Christ so although it wasn’t what you were supposed to say at least it wasn’t wrong.

I guess it was a weekend for messing up.

Last night I was doing the first reading about the shoot sprouting from the stump of Jesse. Only I read it as the shoot sprouting from the rump of Jesse – I almost died. I corrected myself and silently thanked God for not losing my composure. I confess that at one point during Mass I had a visual of what I had read and almost lost it at that point.

ROFL! 😃 That is funny!!! I mean, taking it out of context for a moment…how funny.

Aw…it’s ok. Everyone makes mistakes. I was an EEM back in PA…and my first time, I was so nervous…I could barely say anything. I wasn’t even standing where everyone else was…I was almost in the aisle (when distributing the host.)😊 My husband told me about it when I came back to our pew. HA! So…do you feel so humbled that you are serving our Lord in this way? Isn’t it remarkable that He chooses us, in our unworthiness? God bless you in your good work for your parish, and for the faith!!!

Oh my how embarrassing.
I am glad that you caught yourself though …
wonder what the folks that you communion to think?

No, you can’t have the Catholic idiot of the year award, because I got it when I first became an EMHC! You can have the runner up award, if it would make you feel any better.

The first time I distributed communion, I got to my “place” and completely forgot my line. My mind went blank, cause I was so nervous. The lady in line looked at me, I looked at her, and she finally says “amen.” Oh yea- give her the host! And my hands were so sweaty from being nervous, that the hosts kept on sticking to my fingers, and I had a hard time putting them in hands, on tongues, etc.😊 I was afraid of dropping the ciborium because of my sweaty hands, too. And of course, I forgot to bring it to some of the handicapped people sitting in the pews, too. What a mess! I’m doing much better now, though.

we can all take comfort in the thought that many of the people in the pews aren’t paying attention to what we say or do (or don’t say or do) anyhow.

 I know in my parish that is not true.
Perhaps this is just another reason to stop the excessive use of EMHC’S?

If we eliminate everyone who makes mistakes tha altar will be vacant.
Really? What happened the the Priest?
and if you note I said excessive use of EMHC’s:D not to get rid of them completly

Priests make mistakes, too. One time, in the spot where we say the “Our Father,” our priest started a “Hail Mary.”

But that’s OK, parishoners also make mistakes. When I take my baby son to mass, I’m used to the priests first blessing my son and then giving me the Eucharist. Today we had a priest from Uganda who wanted to give me the Eucharist first and then bless my son. We had a brief staredown.

I understand the role of EMs, btw, and I appreciate them 😉

I have yet to have a Priest make a mistake in giving me communion.

 I understand the role of EM’s too…but sadly not every parish that has them actually needs them.
I for one am glad that our Parish has no use for them!

Thank You
Thank You
Thank You, dear friends. I feel better about it now.

Tim–Thank You for the lovely trophy that I had been wanting! LOL!

I know we all try and do our best and we are far from perfect. Your funny stories lifted my heart and I do not feel alone anymore.

Oh, we are all so far from perfect, aren’t we?😛

True. The vast majority of them simply assumed that they were hallucinating.

One time a priest was leading us through the question-and-answer version of the Creed, and he said, “Do you believe in the Devil and all his pomps and false promises?” When nobody answered, he said, "OH. I meant … " :o

😛

How about making mistakes during the Eucharistic Prayer (which after all is the most important part of the Mass)?

Twice in the last year we’ve had priests muck up the order of the parts of the Eucharistic Prayer - both correcting themselves after a few blank looks. Just thankful the words of consecration were done correctly in each case.

I’ve only had one experience where there were really too many EMsHC … otherwise they’ve been restrained and usually used only when, for example, Masses really do follow very close on each other.

As it is, in the one parish where they’re used most often, sometimes it’s a tight fit to get one Mass finished and the Massgoers dispersed before the next one starts.

Never been an issue…have a great priest that actually makes no flubs during mass. But I do understand that there are some out there that do make mistakes/errors/flubs.😦

I have attended mass last one of the day and they where used…go figure no rush to get folks out is there?
Still I would rather have mass run a few mintues late (as it does at times at our Church 5-10mintues not real life altering is it?) then have to receive from a lay person.

When I was a kid, one of the readers mispronounced the word “brazier”. Yep, a flaming “brassiere”. I thought the altar boy was going to pass out and fall off of his chair, he was trying so hard not to laugh out loud.

Oh, and “rump of Jesse”? That’s a priceless visual. :rotfl:
