Can Someone Help with Ascenion Thursday

Hello everyone

I know Ascension Thursday is this week. I will be attending mass but this will be the first time I attend this mass. I am really looking foward to it. My question is what am I to expect? This past Holy Week I experienced the masses and they were so beautiful and many happy tears were shed as I felt the love of our Lord for us. Also I am going to be taking my boys and they had questions during Holy week masses which I didn’t have the answer to and althought I did research afterwards I would like to have an idea this time so I can share with my boys.

As always thank you so much for your help. Is it silly to feel this happy and amazed. All I can keep thinking to myself was HOW LOST I was and where have I been all this time?

It will be like any other Sunday or feast day mass, with the proper prayers, hymns, anthems, and readings relating to the Ascension of Our Lord.

There are no special ceremonies, if that’s what you are wondering.

(Though hundreds of years ago, in the Sarum Rite, the Paschal candle was not merely extinguished, but lifted up by ropes to the ceiling at the appropriate point during the Gospel.)

If you are attending an “EF”/“TLM” Mass, then the only difference is that after the Gospel, the Paschal candle will be extinguished.

If it is the “OF”/“NO”, there are no distinguishing ceremonies for the day.

A lot will depend on what diocese you are in. Most dioceses have opted to move the feast of the Ascension to the Sunday following the feast. In these dioceses, the Thursday when the feast of the Ascension was traditionally celebrated, will not be the feast of the Ascension, but the Thursday in the 6th week of Easter. The celebration of Ascension will replace the Seventh Sunday of Easter. The Sunday, depending on the parish, will be mostly like the other Sundays after Easter, only with the readings and the homily centered on the Ascension of the Lord.

Well. at least some of you will have a Mass on the Holy Day of Obligation. Our NO Mass was moved to Sunday. So I’m going to Seattle to the FSSP parish. High Mass too. Its 2 &1/2 hours each way with an hour and a half for Mass. Mass starts at 7:30pm. So it will be after midnight when I get home. At my age thats a butt buster.

Cheers, at least I have a Mass to go to after all.
