I am involved in a lot of pro-life activism at my university and I stumbled upon this website called “Catholics For Choice.” Here is a direct quote from their website catholicsforchoice.org/ :

"At Catholics for Choice, We Imagine a World:

Where all women and men are trusted to make moral decisions about their lives.

Where the decision to start a family is thoughtful and planned.

Where policy makers and advocates are free to support policies that create a more just and compassionate society.

Where life-saving health interventions aren’t blocked by sectarian interests.

Where abortion is safe, legal and truly accessible, and both contraception and child care are available and affordable.

We Live In a World:

Where abortion remains illegal or unavailable for millions of women around the world, even when it could save their lives.

Where a woman who needs emergency contraception at a hospital or pharmacy is denied because of the religious beliefs of the pharmacist behind the counter, or the nurse in the emergency room.

Where policy makers are ostracized in their churches and harassed by their clergy because of their support for sex education or reproductive health care for poor women.

Where a rape survivor in a war torn country can be told by the Vatican that she must continue the pregnancy that resulted from her attack.

Where more than 40 million people live with HIV and AIDS while the Vatican lobbies against the use of condoms.

In all parts of the world, women, men and their families suffer because they lack the resources to plan their families, and the comprehensive information and education to keep themselves safe and healthy."

How can these people call themselves Catholic? Not only do they blatantly support abortion, but also birth control as well, all while unashamedly attacking the Church?

Also, here is the link to their facebook group:

Servants of the Evil One have to lie. They cannot even tell the truth about their own ‘organizations.’

Their name must be Catholics for ABORTION.

The word choice is not synonymous with the killing of a baby. Look it up if you doubt.

So they have to bend the very meaning of words in order to recruit. I have said time and time again that we must never agree with the terms of the enemy. Pro-life Catholics (which should include all Catholics) must never use the term ‘choice’ to mean ABORTION.

If you adopt the terms of the opposition, you are winning their war for them.

Never call abortion ‘choice.’

It’s part of the “Shopping cart” religious mentality. There are a lot of people who pick out the items they believe in in their religion, and ignore the rest. Maybe they even pick a little from one religion and a little from another. It’s a disturbing trend and causes a lot of scandal.

The more I go through their website I am more and more convinced that, while this organization is aimed at Catholics, there is NO WAY it could have been started by one. There is little to no reference to the Catholic faith (except to criticize it), and the arguments supporting abortion are the same as the ones you find on secular Pro-abortion websites.

I’m sorry. I seem to have missed the connection when we jumped from," How can these people call themselves Catholics," to why the site could not have been started by a Catholic. I’m not well versed on the arguments used pro or against abortion. In the job I had, I was not allowed to take a stand publicly on political issues. However, If you could explain why you believe this site could not have been started by a Catholic, with clear suscinct statements, I’m sure you could find some very knowledgeable people who are willing to discuss this with you.

God bless you…

Catholics are all in different places in our pilgrimage toward perfect unity with out Lord. Catholics for free Choice is an organization which tries to reinforce lies. The Church has many teachings and none of us know all of them, but it is hard to imagine a person who does not know the teaching of the Church on abortion. Thus, a Catholic who is interested in an organization of this kind is really struggling not with abortion, but with authority.

Many of us, most probably, have at some point encountered a teaching which we did not want to admit. One we did not understand or we did not agree with. (I struggled for a long time with questions about homosexuality.) We have a duty of obedience, that even when we do not understand a teaching, we submit, humbly, that the Wisdom of the Church is superior to our own.

So, how does an organization of this kind arise? Through an immaturity of faith, a lack of humility and a lack of trust. It is also possible that it was founded by a non-Catholic trying to make headway for the pro-abortion movement- but I do not see any particular reason to believe that.

Abortion is more complicated than other issues where there might be dissent. Abortion is what has been called a “non- negotiable.” You cannot support abortion rights as a Catholic.

We should be careful in our condemnations. Any organization which protects abortion “rights” is not Catholic. It cannot be. It may, however, be populated by Catholics who are struggling. Catholics who have do not understand the nature of the authority of the Church, Catholics who cannot submit their hearts fully to the Church. Since that is a familiar struggle, we should be able to have empathy even as we resolutely and incontrovertibly condemn the organization as one which propagates lies.

Gosh if I didn’t know any better I’d think it was Episcopalians for Choice. I have several of them in my family and I know how they think. If Catholics have this mind set, why don’t they go join the Episcopal Church? Why would anyone claim to be one type of religion, a conservative religion, yet follow their own beliefs?

“For abortion” would have to conote “for abortion in instances where abortion is sought out.” They’re not for abortion in every instance, only in instances where it is pursued–that’s why they say it’s a choice. Abortion is an uglier word and seems, for that reason, more appropriate. Pro-choice doesn’t encapsulate the horror that many feel with regards to issues around abortion, but it better communicates the position taken. Nothing necessary about any of this though; just my thoughts on the matter.

Good evasion of a No True Scotsman argument.

Abortion is an unspeakably horriffic and ugly act.

Ask yourself why anyone would want to cover up that fact by using a neutral, even positive, word like ‘choice.’

My point is that it’s not a cover up. The position is not specifically for abortion, but for people to decide whether or not to have an abortion. In a morally relativistic world, such as the secular one in which we now live, it is unclear when true human life “begins.” Some people will say at a heartbeat, others will say when the prefrontal cortex (the seat of consciousness) is beginning to develop, and others (Catholics) will say inception (egg + sperm). Because it cannot be agreed upon which terms constitute life, the choice is left up to the person seeking sexual health services.

Notice I haven’t taken a stance on whether or not I agree with abortion. I’m only talking about what the position entails. If I disagree with abortion for personal reasons, it may only reflect my discomfort on the idea, even if I don’t rationalize that everyone should feel as I do. In that case, I am said to be pro-choice–the position that just because I don’t consider it a good practice, doesn’t mean I think everyone should have my position. But you can’t, in this case, say that I am specifically for abortion, as you want this agency to. And, as demonstrated, it wouldn’t make sense to do so.

Imagine what would happen to a group that called themselves “Vegans for Tasty Hamburgers”. They’d be drummed out of existence by irate Vegans and the rest of us would be cheering them on! Same things with these folks - they want the name “Catholic” but not the consequences. We need to fight them whenever and wherever we find them - most especially over the idiocy of their name!

👍👍👍 I like your post- on this and other threads!

You made my point for me. What about Atheists for God? Or Communists for Corporate Tax Cuts? Or Relativists Against Anarchy?

I mean, hey - who said you had to believe in Catholicism to be Catholic, right?

What are you actually saying?

My position is simple:

Abortion is a grave moral evil.

Abortion (look it up in the dictionary!) is not a synonym for ‘choice,’ which is a morally neutral term.

The forces who wish to foster abortion as a ‘choice’ have no ‘choice’ but to lie about its nature.

Examine what it is you’re suggesting that other people have the choice to do.

If you’re an honest person…you know that you’re standing by in silence - allowing one person to kill another.
