Yes, but this part of the forum is for questions and problems about the forum itself. You would garner better response if your post was located in Apologetics.

Question:

Jesus said to call no man “father” so why do Catholics call priests “father” ?

http://www.defendingthebride.com/ch/call.html

This article emphasizes the Scriptural passages in question.

Jesus was not speaking literally but showing how fathers and teachers find their true authority only in God. Since, the Bible shows that Christian leaders are called fathers it is most biblical to call priests “father.”

So, the all important question is why do Protestants NOT call their spiritual leaders “Father?”

The priestly title of “Father” comes from Sacred Tradition, not Holy Scripture. It’s a familial term denoting that a priest is in a fatherly role towards the faithful.

Jesus was not possibly speaking of the Catholic practice as it did not yet exist. I think the Lord was warning us’ however, to never trust others more than God or in place of God. The religious leaders of his time had essentially taken their roles to an extreme.

The Lord’s warning is valid today and should not be forgotten regardless of whatever titles we assign to our clergy… Father, preacher, pastor, reverend, bishop, parson, etc.

A few years ago, our priest was being a little overbearing about how he wanted things done at church. One of our elderly parishioners spoke up and said “Don’t forget, Father, your a priest, not God!” He clearly did not like the comment, but I think her point was well taken. He lightened up a bit on his policies after that.

Context, context, context.

Well, Jesus in the Rich man and Lazarus parable addressed Abraham as Father Abraham. In Mat 19:19, Jesus asked the Rich Young Man to honor his father and mother and the rich man affirmed that. In Mat 19:29, Jesus addressed “father” and “mother” again. It certainly shows that Jesus didn’t have a problem calling another “father”. In the Gospel of Matthew the author didn’t have a problem using the term father when listing the genealogy of Jesus. If the Gospel writer was prohibited to use the term father, he wouldn’t be using it at all in his gospel. Since he did, the only conclusion one could make is that 1) he wasn’t prohibited or 2) he disobeyed Jesus

No right need to be given, it is in the 10 Commandments. God said Ex 20:12 “Honor your father and mother…”. We would be dishonoring our parents by not calling them father or mother. How do you address your parents other than father/mother?

Thank you JohnR77. I understand what you are saying, but calling just anyone Father no one would do. We knew our fathers and mothers as just that. So when a man called out to Jesus “Father” Jesus was talking about my and your Father in heaven. He took the time to tell us we have only one a father in heaven. For some reason to me, Just because someone calls out to Abraham “Father” it is because he is, and was, an earthly father. Jesus in my opinion, because this man just called him Father, let him know the difference. And I feel that they already called someone father? Where did this man get the idea to call someone he did"t know, father? When you think of Jesus giving “The Keys to The Kingdom of heaven” to Peter, one would think that Jesus would tell them that they could call them self Father for isn’t that what they are doing? Fathering. But he called them brother and sister. To me, Jesus is telling us that when he said “they draw near to me with their words and with their actions do honor me, but there hearts are far from me” it was maybe to things like that. Isn’t it true we are commanded to “love thy father with all your soul, with all thy heart, and with all thy mind”. We would never pray to any other God, but back then it was a different world and truly, still today. I love Our Father, I love Jesus even, and the same, with the Holy Spirit. Because they are as one. So maybe as Jesus told Peter and the rest of the apostles what he wanted to happen in his church. (all the way up to the last supper, they were in training). That as Priest they would have “the authority” to be called father for they devote their life to him and act as a go between. I am always honored to be by a Catholic Priest or a sister. I am seeking, knocking, and asking. Jesus did mean what he said, so we won’t forget it. Thanks again for your (name removed by moderator)ut and help John.

Jesus said also to call no man rabbi, because we have one teacher, but what does He do at the great commission? Instruct the apostles to teach.

He was using hyperbole to make a point about sinful pride.

" I write these things, not to put you to shame, but to admonish you as my dearest children. For, although you have ten thousand tutors in Christ, yet you have not many fathers. For in Christ Jesus, through the gospel, did I beget you. Therefore, I beg you, be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. For this very reason, I have sent to you , Timothy, who is my dearest son and faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my ways, which are in Christ Jesus, even as I teach everywhere, in every church.
1 Corinthians 5: 14-17

Lizzie is a new Catholic convert and gives Biblical references and references from Holy tradition to show what Our Lord meant by saying “ Call no man your Father”. It’s not against His teaching to call priest Father. Hope you enjoy the video! She’s a great apologist!
