Can someone who votes for a pro-abortion political candidate recieve Holy Communion (provided the other Candidate is not pro-abortion) ?

The answer is: NO. We may not receive Holy Communion if we vote for a pro-abortion or pro-euthanasia politician.
When given a choice with one candidate being pro-abortion and another being pro-life, it is a Mortal Sin to vote for any candidate who is pro-abortion.

The only exception would be: “in the presence of proportionate reasons”.
In the USA there is no proportionate reason for the killing of 1.4 MILLION of our babies each year.
(50 MILLION babies have been murdered for convenience since 1973 in just the USA.)

See Statement in its entirety from Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

Catholics are required to vote.
CCC - " 2240 Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s country".

Incumbents must be held responsible for his/her own votes and actions (as opposed to campaign verbiage.)

That’s not quite what it says:

“2. The Church teaches that abortion or euthanasia is a grave sin. The Encyclical Letter Evangelium vitae, with reference to judicial decisions or civil laws that authorize or promote abortion or euthanasia, states that there is a “grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection. …] In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to 'take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law or vote for it’” (no. 73). Christians have a “grave obligation of conscience not to cooperate formally in practices which, even if permitted by civil legislation, are contrary to God’s law. Indeed, from the moral standpoint, it is never licit to cooperate formally in evil. …] This cooperation can never be justified either by invoking respect for the freedom of others or by appealing to the fact that civil law permits it or requires it” (no. 74).”

It’s one thing to vote for a law legalizing abortion or euthanasia. It is another to vote for a candidate who is pro abortion but has other policies that are good for the country. When voting for a candidate, there are many issues to consider - not just one issue.

You are wrong - unless there are PROPORTIONATE REASONS.

The proprotionate reason would have to be proportionate to killing approx 1.4 MILLION Innocents each year in the USA, and more worldwide through American abortion funding at the United Nations.

There is no way I am voting for a candidate based on one issue. Sorry!

Would you vote for a candidate who was anti-abortion but a warmonger, fiscally irresponsible and didn’t care a bit for the poor?

I agree. There are many issues to consider when voting for a candidate. Want my opinion about many politicians? They ride the anti-abortion wagon just to get elected into office and win the votes of those people who can’t see beyond that issue. I’ll get blasted for saying this I know!!

I would, because at least the poor are alive, and it is my duty as a Catholic to care for them. But a pro-abortion president doesn’t even value life at its most vulnerable state. If one doesn’t value it then, they don’t understand human dignity at any point.

True Lite -
Hypothetical candidates who do not exist, are not subject for discussion. You are descibing a Schizophrenic candidate in reality.
Usually when someone is anti-abortion, they do respect Life, and human person.

Please remember the original question about recieving Holy Communion.
And you’re living in la-la land where everything is nice and neat.

Yes, you can be politically or socially liberal in some things and conservative in others.

I’ll step aside for now and let others chime in.

This is why public voting records are most important for all incumbents - regardless of Party affiliation. (At both the Federal and State levels.)

Voting records tell the truth.

This is not a matter of liberal or conservative. It is a matter of life and death.

Many people cast votes based primarily on a single issue. Abortion is one. There are single issue pro-abortion voters just as there are single issue pro-life voters. I’ve heard some people say they would not vote for anyone who is not pro-choice. Others vote solely on an anti-war basis, or solely on a pro-union basis. During the civil war I suppose there were many who voted primarily on the single issue of slavery, either for or against. If the issue is important enough, why not?

And 50 million dead since Roe v Wade seems important enough to me. Abortion hasn’t just killed them. It’s killing the country.

" A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate’s permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia. When a Catholic does not share a candidate’s stand in favour of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons." - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger

Without existing and accurate PROPROTIONATE reasons, one may not receive Holy Communion.

Yes they may👍
Sorry Mr. Methodist.
No they may not, without a “proportionate” reason.

However, if it helps, I was only talking about Catholics and the Catholic Church. Sorry if you thought I was talking about Protestant Churches.

The US Bishops said the Catholics are not single-issue voters, and listed a whole bunch of issues to consider when voting. That’s what I go by.
Would you vote for a candidate who was anti-abortion but a warmonger, fiscally irresponsible and didn’t care a bit for the poor?
Nope, I wouldn’t. When I vote for a candidate, I look at the whole picture.

Not by me…

People are going to vote keeping in mind issues that mean most to them. That’s not going to change.

Those are the Cafeteria Catholics who should not recieve Holy Communion.
The USCCB has also supported fake Global Warming in the past, and the DREAM Act neither of which has anything to do with Church Dogma.

CCC - " 2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.
Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.
God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.

Yes, abortion is evil. Yes, one should look at where a candidate stands with regards to abortion. And yes, one will look at other issues that represent a candidate as well.
