I would like too now what you thing about the people that come too church, just before the Gospel or after, and what you feel about people that receive Holy Communion, and than walk out with out going back too their pew,and say a pray. If people are truly their for the Love of God,than they should be their at the beinging of Mass, and stay too the end, I concerned that the Mass is not forefilled. I also seen people come in durning Holy Communion and stay to the end, but all the people I mention, have not forefilled their Sunday Mass.Only the one,s that come at the beinging ,and tell the end.and have showen their Love for God.
And it sad when people can,t turn their cell phone, while their in their pew, their to take part in the Mass, not seeing what message or who is calling,Iam sure that they could shut it off,and when they leave, turn it back on, In some church,s I go too, thay tell, before Mass start,s too please shut your cell phone,s off while Mass is going on.

We should focus on God during Mass, not other people. Their actions are not our responsibility.

IMHO, if people are at Mass for their love of God, then they are not paying attention to what other people doing.

We can’t control the behavior of others or let their behavior control us. All we can do is pray for them.

I have in the past spent most of the Mass outside the doors listening to and participating in the mass from there, for various reasons. Just because you only see them come in for communion does not mean they have been failing to participate in Mass.

Also, just so you aware, there are all sorts of apps on phones that provide the readings for mass and other devotional material. Just because someone is looking at their phone does not mean they are failing to focus on Christ or participate in the Mass.

Any one can be late on occasion but it should not be all the time. For those who are chronically late, or make a habit of leaving early: I think they are rude and showing great disrespect to God. Either you make time for worship or you don’t. Receiving Holy Communion is not a magic trick that get’s one into heaven. It needs to be received worthily, not on the fly as if grabbing a random snack for the day.

Yep. Sometimes if I happen to stop by an EF Mass, but I do not have access to a Latin-English Missal (say because most of those participating in the Mass are Spanish-speakers), I will use my phone to get the missal for the day’s Mass. I’m using my phone to follow along with what Father is doing.

A friend of mine has an app on her phone for the TLM. One day she was using it at Mass and her five year old daughter said, “Mommy, why are you playing on your phone?” 😉

It hurts me for our Lord when I see others disrespecting God, especially during Mass. However, I must remember that it is probably due to a lack of knowledge, a lack of education, about Mass and our part in it. But it still hurts, and is wrong.

But I also sin and fall short of the Glory of God. My sins hurt God, too, whether committed during Mass, after or before Mass, at any time.

I pray for them, and beg of Mercy from God, not only for my sins, but for others as well. I also try to keep my eyes closed and focus on God, and not on what others are doing. I don’t want to be tempted to judge them.

I do think more could be done by our church leaders to help those who don’t have the knowledge that they might need to show true respect to the Lord.

I would have said, “No, cookie, my missal is on that phone and I’m following along with the Mass.”

That is their’s and God’s problem.
If you are early enough to get a row closer to the front of the church, you may be less apt to be aware of late comers. This may ease your mind somewhat.

The OP isn’t talking about people using their phone to read a missal. It’s the ringing and answering and checking messages he/she is referring too. And saying that we should be focused on God and not what someone else is doing does not work when the phone is ringing by playing some rock music so loudly that everyone in the church can hear it. No matter how much you try to focus on the Mass, that ringing will disrupt your focus.

I understand your frustration and concern, however I do want to point out that sometimes people have very good reasons for coming and going during Mass. I am often unable to be at Mass the entire time, because I have a couple little children, in addition to the older ones that are present for the whole of the Mass. Just this past Sunday, on Mother’s Day, it was standing room only at our church. Guess who stood at the back? It was mostly mothers and babies and other pregnant mamas like myself. I, as well as many others, slipped out to walk one child over to the nursery, and to bring another little one back out. And after I received Holy Communion, I waited just long enough to consume the Host and listen for the bell signaling the Host was reserved in the tabernacle, before I left to return to the nursery because, being pregnant, I was physically unable to stand while holding my toddler any longer. I left with many other mothers in similar predicaments.
So I hope that helps you a bit, to know that some people have very good reasons to come and go. Whether it be parents, or CCD teachers coming to Mass after class, or elderly folks, or caregivers who must leave by a certain time to return to their loved one, there are many good reasons why people who love our Lord might be obliged to slip in or out during Mass. Please don’t take it personally. Just say a prayer for them and their situation. I know that on the rare occasion where I am able to enjoy the entire Mass without interruption and without juggling babies, it is truly a foretaste of heaven. So be thankful if you have such opportunities and do not be too harsh in your assessment of those who are not so lucky.
God bless!

Some people are lazy.

Some people go to Mass because it is and “obligation”, and they are not much more than physically present.

Some people try really hard, but life dealt them issues like ADD and ADHD, or OCD. You can make fun of that, but until you have walked in those moccasins, all you are doing is flappiung your jaw, and standing in judgement of someone who may be trying just as hard as you are to follow Christ. Or maybe even harder.

Some people have the luxury of having a job, and the burden of having to work hours that barely let them get to Mass; and don’t provide the luxury of staying beyond reception of
Communion.

Some people are caretakers for others, and are squeezing Mass in as best they can because they have not asked you ;or me to cover for them. And they wouldn’t ask, because they know we are at the same Mass.

Some people were very poorly catechized; and or course that is their fault, right?

And I am sure there are other reasons, and some excuses.

Christ said “Come, follow me” but some have never heard that; all they have heard are rules; and they think that “having a personal relationship with Christ” is a Protestant thing, particularly because the only people they have heard it from are Protestants. all they see are rules and “obligations”, so they deal with it on that level.

And some people, like the Pharisee in the temple, tell God about all the great things they do, and how they are at Mass before time so they can prepare, and how they stay later to pray in spite of all the other people who ruin their solitude after Mass by chatting… and some come sliding into the temple late, stay in the back, and as God’s mercy for being a sinner.

When I go to Mass, other people are the furthest thing from my mind.

Can we not count any annoyances we may have toward our penance??

The most Important thing should be,that we love God with all our Heart,s. If people can,t take the time to be in church from the beinging too the end their is no excuse, for their are Mass on Sat and Sun,for their are diffident times,on those day,s,so that people can go to Mass. At one parish, the priest was giving Holy Communion too the people up in the choir, when he came out threw the door he seen A father and his son leaving, he said too them were are you going,MASS Isn,t over with.

Sometimes coming late or leaving early is about necessity rather than a lack of love. I use to work both sat and sun so that the only way I could get to mass was to rush straight from work to the 5:30. If anything held me up at work or if traffic was a little worse than usual I would be late for mass and there wasn’t a thing I could do about it. I have also had to leave Mass early both because I was feeling unwell and because I needed to get back home to take care of others. How do we know the father wasn’t leaving because the little boy let him know he felt nauseous?

Yes, love of God should be our priority, but not everyone coming to mass late or leaving early is doing it because of a lack of love for God. It is wrong to assume that that is the cause of their actions, if I am not mistaken making such a judgment is called the sin of rash judgment. You can read all about it in the CCC in their section on the 8th commandment.

If that is your response to all that I have shared about legitimate reasons why people may have to slip in and out of Mass, then I feel sorry for you. You are insisting upon a judgemental perspective, that purposefully overlooks what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says regarding legitimate reasons to miss Mass. If a person already has legitimate reason to miss Mass altogether, but they still make the effort to attend and participate as much as they are able, then, despite what you say about them having no excuse, they are EXCUSED by the Church herself, and furthermore they show their love for God by doing what is not required of them.
As a pregnant mother who cannot stand for an hour at a time, who also has a nursling, I do have an excuse, straight from the Catechism. And yet, every Sunday, I will be at Mass for as long as my body and my little ones can handle. I accept help when it is available, and sometimes my family will split up and go to separate Masses. But if I must step out with a child, or go sit down outside because it is once-again standing room only in the Mass, I will do so without guilt, only regret for what I am missing. If anyone at my parish is judging me like you would, I will just let them do so. They are only harming themselves.🤷
