Can the Bible dictate sexual morals?

Despite frequent claims to the contrary, not a single biblical book endorses marriage between one man and one woman for the purposes of procreation.
‘And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth.’

Genesis 1:27-28

‘Wherefore a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be two in one flesh.’

Genesis 2:24

She makes some claims that are correct to a degree on the surface but missing the point, others like the quoted above, make her lose credibility.

I just read the following on a Washington Post website:

Debunking ‘Biblical marriage’: Why the Bible can’t dictate today’s sexual morals

I wonder how a Catholic Apologist would respond to this and whether or not Ms. Knust has credibility as a biblical scholar.
The Bible can’t, but the Church can, Jesus said so.

I read the article cited, and it is hard to argue against it - mostly because the article is a rambling collection of incoherent observations of diversity in Biblical quotes. The article just does not put forth any hypothesis that it supports. The use of the loaded word “dictate” is typical of this unreasoning approach. “Dictate” has come to mean an enforced imposition of an order or principle that must be obeyed. Neither the Church nor the Bible dictates anything in that sense. Instead they both INVITE people to come to know God, and part of knowing God is knowing what He has told us. So you can throw out the title of the article right from the start. After that, there just isn’t much to say.

Quote: “Since the Bible never offers anything like a straightforward set of teachings about marriage, desire, or God’s perspective on the human body, the only way to pretend that it does is to refuse to read it.”

I thought that Baptists (especially Pastors) claimed Sola Scriptura as the sole rule of faith?

Quote:“when Jesus speaks about marriage, he largely warns against it, presenting family life as a distracting waste of time.”

The next posters will appreciate that line.

It is a poorly written advertisement to sell a book; the good news is the writing is identical in both. As a Baptist she struggles to accept anything which occurs before her birth(autocracy), and needs all teaching to be direct quotes from the King James Bible. This is just one of hundreds of struggles from using such a limited mind set.

The article assumes certain things about the Bible that simply aren’t true. The word contradictory seems out of place. Jesus gave a number of direct statements regarding marriage and divorce. “today’s sexual morals” are established by who? This is not addressed by the writer. The Catholic Church cannot dictate and the priest won’t be pounding on your door on Monday if you missed Mass on Sunday.

The Magisterium of the Catholic Church has addressed this topic. Perhaps she should read Theology of the Body by Pope John Paul II. I cannot assess her credibility as a Biblical scholar based on one article. At best, she is very confused about the Bible and its authorship. She also repeats the false notion that the husband, no matter how awful, is in charge of the house. She ignores the direct command given in Ephesians:

bible.cc/ephesians/5-25.htm

Her writing partly echoes the radical feminist mindset that views all women as oppressed in marriage.

Peace,
Ed

Scripture, in union with tradition and the unchanging teachings of the Catholic Church can.
