Can the Church really trace it's Bishops and Popes?

I have heard that the Catholic Church can literely trace back it’s Bishops and Popes all the way to the Apostles of Christ in an unbroken line of sucsession. Is this true and does the Church have all of this on documented papers within the vatican?
