Can the church take away someone’s sainthood after canonization?

Even if the evidence they had to canonize the saint was later proved to be erroneous?

I think your question is clear. My thoughts are if the Church knew 100% without a doubt on a very serious issue, that She would consider removing the title Saint. Yet this will never happen…for as in the case of St. John Paul ll he is not here to be heard…this man would have no trouble defending himself. I truly believe in my heart and in my soul that this gentle and good man was a true Disciple of Jesus Christ and would never pierce the Heart of Christ or of the Holy Church.God bless and keep you.

I think he is a saint, I was just using him as an example.

The “evidence” isn’t just made up of written records, but many miracles need to be attributed to someone before their canonization can take place. So, I would say “yes” to this.

Well hasn’t the “many” miracles requirement been reduced?

And St JPII just had an air of sainthood around him… he was one of those figures where the presence of the Spirit was palpable.

We hold canonization to be a proclamation of indisputable reason to believe the deceased is in heaven. That cannot be “undone”. Regardless of what we learn about a person later, it doesn’t change their eternal destiny because God was aware of the state of their deeds and soul all along. Our knowledge, and more importantly, our opinions do not carry the weight we seem to think they should in the spiritual realm. That’s probably part of the divine design, when you think about it.

definitely no…St John Paul 11 is one of our great saints.

No human can kick a saint out of heaven 🙂

In the opinion of many, when the pope canonizes, he uses his charisma of infallibility. But the recent canonization of some people (I think we’ve already named one), puts my faith in papal infallibility to a hard test, and to get out of it, I tell myself that probably the pope is not infallible when he canonizes …
