Can the devil cause physical effects?

Can the devil, demons, whatever else exists on “the dark side” of the Catholic cosmology cause physical effects, or is this just a Horror movie phenomenon?

Examples include: Causing blood to run from walls, strange noises, doors slamming by themselves, mirrors cracking, sulphurous odors, etc. Is there any officially recognized instance of this or of a potential for this kind of thing to happen, anywhere in the Church?

Also, can the devil possess a dog and have it bite someone?

The devil is not a Catholic phenomenon, its Christian, as he is the Lords greatest enemy.

Do people get possesed … YES
Is it real… YES

Can it happen to anyone… YES, but mainly it happens to HOLY or religious persons…

Thanks for the info, Jan, but my questions were not asking that. I’m presuming that human possession is possible, but I’m wondering…ah well, if you didn’t read my first post what tells me you’ll read my second…?

Anyone have an answer to my questions?

**Yes, the devil can cause physical effects., there are documented cases by the church. and yes he does make blood run off walls, strange nosies, etc. etc…

The devil can posses anyone and anything, but as I have said , he usually hates Holy or religious people.

So, then, making cloven-hoof footprints in the snow wouldn’t be a problem for him?

**Well, all sarcasm aside, he does not have hoofed feet… He takes many forms, and can appear to be an angel of light if he so wishes.

He has many minions, dark fallen angels… He would love for you to not believe he is real, that is his main goal for Gods children

Who was being sarcastic? I saw cloven-hoof prints outside my house one day in winter and was wondering if the devil did it. Not too many dogs have cloven-hoofs…

The answer to your first question is that the devil can indeed cause physical effects; this is not just a horror movie phenomenon. You might be interested in a thread on the “Moral Theology” subforum titled “Buy in a haunted neighborhood?”.

There are also stories about St. John Vianney being visited regularly by the devil and having weird things happen around him. If I remember correctly, he was having some guests over one evening and there was a weird sound from the next room; the guests were startled and Fr. John (as he was then) made a dismissive gesture and said “Don’t worry, it’s only the devil.”

I can’t speak to dog bites, although I would blame rabies before I blamed Satan.

I am a spiritual child of Padre Pio.(St. Pio) did you ever read about him and his attacks of the devil…? He is a modern day Saint who suffered all the five wounds of Christ.(stigmata)

Yes the devil can do physical things. Generally to cause people fear or some other evil purpose. Leaving deer tracks in your yard… what for? Are you scared of Deer?
 
You need only read the book of Job to see what Satan, the devil, that old snake can do.

We are told that in the end times the antichrist will work false miracles – signs and wonders.

Matthew 24:24
For there shall arise **false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; **insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

2 Thessalonians 2:9
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders,

So, if one shows up doing miracles, test their message, and if they are leading people towards God, Jesus or if they are leading people away from the real Jesus towards a false christ.

A couple of misconceptions here…the devil cannot possess anybody at all. Possession is extremely rare. Possession can only happen if given by the free will of the person in question. But demonic obseesion sure is flourishing (a lot less degree than possession)…

Yes, he does hate holy people or anyone very strong in the faith. We have all the Saints to look at…Sts John Vianney, Padre Pio (from a very early age), St John Bosco, St Theresa of Avila.

The question here is whether the devil would even recognize any Christian today and is that christian a threat to him at all. Most people do not want to pay the price of rejection from close family and friends because of Faith. Let alone being a threat to him. If one is, well, then praise God! You are doing something right in God’s eyes! 😉

**Free will has nothing to do with the devil and possesion. Even Holy people dont will Satans attacks, but accept it as part of Gods will for them

You are talking about two different things here. Possession has everything to do with free will.

Being attacked by the devil as experienced by the saints is a totally different thing. The attacks to them are from the outside.

The attacks in possession are from the inside of the person. This is the major difference…
 
I think that there are deer in the city…what part of the city? What city?
 
i would guess it was a deer, it is amazing how those things can hide.

I mean, I have even seen deer in parks miles from anywhere they should be. They will feed on trees and stuff in peoples yards, and hide in an out of the way place at night.

Personally I think the devil is much more subtle, he gives you that influence that leads you to sin. He laughs everytime you sin and cries and wails everytime you confess, it’s a constant struggle.
