For the last two years, I have helped make the bread for communion on Holy Thursday. However, the recipe has baking powder in it, in addition to flour, oil, salt, and water. Is this allowed, since baking powder is considered a leavening?

Hi,

The only bread that the Catholic Church allows is made of wheat flour and water only.

The closest ‘real bread’ that fits the Church’s requirement is chapati. That Indian bread is strictly flour and water and can be cooked it on a rack above the stove burner. It doesn’t keep and is impractical for daily use, but fresh this chapati fits the bill perfectly.
