Hello all,

I was wondering if the Holy Spirit can still speak to me even though I’m not baptized?

Hello all,

I was wondering if the Holy Spirit can still speak to me even though I’m not baptized?
Hi dje,
First of all, yes. God speaks to all of us, saved and unsaved, whether we know or acknowledge it. Jesus was sent by God to teach us (John 7:16), and He said those that came to Him were drawn by the Father (John 6:44).
I get the feeling that you are wondering if you should get baptized. As a fellow Protestant let me begin by saying that I believe the steps toward salvation are hearing, believing, accepting, repenting, and being baptized. However, I would never tell someone they are not saved if they have not been baptized. I can tell you why I hold these beliefs and let you decide for yourself. Jesus began His ministry by being baptized to fulfill all righteousness and it pleased God (Matt. 4:13 -17). In the Great Commission (Matt 28:18-20) Jesus commands us to baptize disciples in all nations (even desert nations). In Hebrews 6:1-2, Paul calls baptism part of the foundation of our faith, on par with faith in God. Finally, in all of the New Testament, we read over and over of new believers being baptized, but never once saying the sinner’s prayer. Thank you for a chance to minister to you, I hope this helps. God Bless you.

I fully plan on being baptized. I’m kind of bummed that I was never baptized as a child, but thats what happens when your family isn’t all that religious. I fully believe that baptism is a significant, mandatory part of being saved (if one is able to be baptized). I was just worried that maybe God doesn’t speak to those who have not been baptized. Often, when I pray, I feel that I am just speaking to empty air and I was worried that this might have something to do with my not being baptized.

stevekehl is correct, though incomplete.

Baptism is important, and the bright side is that you get all your sins cleansed away in one fell swoop. Cool, hunh?

Sin, does come between us and God, there is no doubt, but it doesn’t mean that God isn’t there and that He doesn’t hear us, it just makes it harder for us to discern Him and his will.

If you don’t feel Him, the answer is pray more.

Jesus gave us the “Our Father”, use it as a model and a guide and don’t be afraid to repeat it. There is profound, deep meaning within every word of it. Pray the psalms out loud. There are many prayers to be found within scripture. The nice thing about them is that they are guaranteed to lead us to a better understanding of God and so be better able to perceive His presence in our lives. The danger of freeform prayer, especially as we are just starting out in our prayer lives is that, we can tend to create “god” in *our *image through prayer rather than meet Him where He is.

Get Baptized, read a lot more scripture, and pray more than you think you are able to. And then, when you are ready to experience the real presence in the form of the Eucharist, look out!

Yes, God is always speaking to all of us… in that still, quiet voice; the question is do we know how to hear Him?

dj,
I think to a certain extent that it will depend on what you mean by “speak to”. I don’t mean this in any flippant way, but recongize that we often use terms in ways that are more general than specific.
If by, “speak to” you mean can the Holy Spirit act in you, move you, excite you, encourage you, enlighten you, then I am happy to say YES He can.
If by "speak to you are meaning something more specific and narrow, like actual speaking - a voice in you ear, then this is far less likely. And this for many reasons, not simply because you have not been baptized.

Most Chrisitan faith traditions believe that it is the grace of God, the action of the Holy Spirit, that must be the first cause of our coming to faith. That we are unable to come to faith without that initial action on the part of the Holy Spirit. So in this sense, the Holy Spirit has alreadyspoken to you and you have responded with a clear, “Yes, tell me more”, and the Spirit has led you here.

Peace
James

… I am baptized. Not long having returned to church with my daughter. There are times when I pray it also feels like I am just speaking to myself or “to empty air.” Though REALLY I know otherwise. There is nothing empty about prayer. Nothing at all.

Keep praying. Don’t stop. Maybe one day you’ll be surprised. For nothing is impossible. But don’t stop.

Hello all,

I was wondering if the Holy Spirit can still speak to me even though I’m not baptized?
yes by all means, it is He who is the one who moves the unbaptized to seek to know and love Christ, to come to the Father through HIm, and to come to baptism and to invite the Holy Spirit to dwell in them.
welcome HOme!

Be careful, my friend. Remember to test the Spirit.

1 John 4:1
Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Hello all,

The Light of Christ, Light Within, “that of God”, Holy Spirit speaks to you each day seeking to guide you into Communion with Him…of course the Holy Spirit speaks to you…

Of course…how and why else are there so many converts…the Holy Spirit speaks…you just have to listen.

The LDS believe that the Holy Spirit can touch everyone, and enlighten, but that only those with the gift of the Holy Spirit have the right for the Holy Spirit to dwell with them.

Hi again dje,
The fact that you are taking this matter so seriously is proof that the Holy Spirit is speaking too you. Don’t hesitate to get baptized, part of living under God is surrender to His will. I encourage you to keep praying and try this just once. One night I decided to thank God for as many things as I could think of and name each person and blessing individually. Thank you for a good mom and dad, thank you they are Christians, thank you for Tammy (wife), thank you for Victoria and Katie (daughters), and on, and on, and on. Thank you for my job, thank you for this country etc… ending with thanking God for Jesus, His atoning death, victory over the grave, and “Amen! Come Lord Jesus.” Rev. 22:20. I lost track of time and was brought to tears in gratitude and humility. God is a wonderous, wise, and powerful force, be patient, listen, watch for the ways God is involved in your life. Remember, God spoke to Elijah in a whispering voice, not in the roaring wind or earthquake (1 Kings 19).
I have been praying for you and will keep you in my prayers.
God Bless You.

Yes, indeed, the Holy Spirit can and will speak to you. The question is, will you hear Him? And if you hear Him, will you listen?
