Can the laity "bless" religious articles.

I recently installed an alter in my home. It consists of two pictures, one of the Blessed Mother, and one of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Between these photos is a crucifix, and nest to it is a candle purchased from my local parish church. When I asked the pastor if I should bring in the components to be blessed, he asked me if I was using the alter. I told him that yes I had already used it in praying the rosary. He told me that it was already blessed, just by me using it. Is this correct? Does using religious articles like crucifixes, photos, candles, etc, by a lay person actually bring down heavenly blessings on that article?
