I was just wondering if there’s a situation in which the maniple may be used in the Novus…
No, it was specifically eliminated from the list of liturgical vestments used by the Celebrant. However as opposed to popular belief it is perfectly fine for a priest to use a Beretta and/or a “Fiddleback” (Roman style chasable) or a Spanish style chasable. There is no statement requiring the Gothic style that is in common use.I was just wondering if there’s a situation in which the maniple may be used in the Novus…
It’s interesting that only the maniple was eliminated. All other vestments remain acceptable although the way the stole is worn by the priest has been mandated to be the same as the bishop and no longer crossed in front to form an “X”.No, it was specifically eliminated from the list of liturgical vestments used by the Celebrant. A funny story about that this reminds me of is a dear priest friend of mine. Well, Father has a dog. The dog just happens to be a large male German Sheepherd name Blitzkrieg. Well this priest friend of mine also would wear a birretta at times and one day he left it on his table in the rectory. Well, Blitz was young and teething and ate his birretta. So, not only are they good for keeping yoru head warm but they are a great source of fiber for your household pets.the priest at my parish here in philly still wears the biretta… AWESOME!!!
A priest should use a Beretta only if he needs serious protection.
But a biretta is acceptable for everyday wear.
What was the reason for the elimination of the maniple??No, it was specifically eliminated from the list of liturgical vestments used by the Celebrant. I always think that it is a bad idea to do anything outside of what is provided for in the rubrics. The maniple looked so cool. The symbolism behind it was very profound. Would it be sinful to use it anyway?
True, I was a bit nutty when I posted.I always think that it is a bad idea to do anything outside of what is provided for in the rubrics.
Thank goodness few priests wear those “fiddleback” chasubles that looked like funky bulletproof vests…The use of the maniple was officially suppressed in the 1967 Second Instruction on the Liturgy, so it could not be used at Masses today, except at those according to the 1962 missal. Sad.
Instructions are not given as to the style of a chasuble. **(Maybe if they were, we would not have so many ugly ones today.) ** A biretta is no longer listed as required for Mass, but was not suppressed as the maniple was. Its continued use in Rome and other major Sees, as well as by bishops in choir dress, certainly is an indication that it may be used in at least some circumstances.
