Can the rich enter heaven?

In Matthew 19:24, Jesus commented that it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. How literally can this be taken? Is this merely a warning about not allowing riches and possessions to obstruct us from that which is really important–love of God?
