Can the souls in Purgatory still merit through their prayers for the living?

It is said that the souls in Purgatory cannot pray for themselves so as to alleviate their sufferings in Purgatory, but they can still pray for the people on Earth.

My question is can the souls in Purgatory merit for themselves for the prayers they say for the people still living on Earth? Or the time for meriting is now over when one leaves Earth?
