Can the souls in Purgatory visit us?

My wife has just finished reading "The Amazing Secret of the Souls in Purgatory: An Interview with Maria Simma ". She thinks it is a great book, and feels that souls in purgatory indeed visit us (or at least Maria Simma) and ask us to pray for them to get them out of purgatory. I have my doubts, it does not seem to me that God would want souls that are to spend time in purgatory begging strangers to pray for them so they can get out earlier…does the church have any views on this matter?
