Can there be more than one interpretation of the Bible?

The difference is where do the different churches draw their authority. The Catholic Church follows the Apostles Successors under the direction of the Bishop of Rome.
There are thousands, as has already been demonstrated, of different denominations that are autonomous. For example, the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod does not recognize the authority of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. True - they share a lot in common but that does not mean they are not different denominations. To use your logic of “they all share some beliefs” to its logical conclusion - then they is only one Christian church in the world - despite some of the “few differences” like whether or not you have to be baptized, 2,3,4,5,6, or 7 sacraments, women priests, gay priests, etc…

The website got information that you will find in the threads - but I’d be happy to go ahead and give you the cite so you don’t have to work for it.

Handbook of Denominations in the United States by Frank S. Mead, and Samuel S. Hill. Abingdon Press. They’re up to the 12th or so version by now.

Good luck in your studies. (I just looked at your profile - got the crazy idea that you were Lutheran from your handle - who would have thought! lol)

Where there are many meanings of scripture there is only one interpretation. the one given by the Church which is the pillar and ground of the Truth. The “rule of faith” for Catholics is the Church and the separated churches use the Bible as their sole “rule” for their faith. That is why there are so many of them, there are many meanings and different churches focus in on the ones they want as well as their presuppositions to interpret scripture in opposition to the Catholic Church. That is what protestant means, protester. If It can’t be Catholic, it must be any other way besides it. This is in opposition to the very basic principles of truth, to go where truth leads you and not to rule out something as wrong from the start. Search for the truth has led many to the one true faith, such as David Currie, Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi, Cardinal Newman, etc. We will welcome all who accept the truth and wish to sin no more. Come Home to Christian unity!

Interesting note - The Scriptures were not determined officially until the Council of Trent. It was the Catholic Church that safe guarded and translated the scriptures from the time they were wrote.

That said - the Church can never say anything contradictory to Scripture as that would akin to a parent trying to change their kid’s name on his 21st birthday. It can’t be done.

That’s the ironic thing - Protestants believe in sola scriptura but reject the very Church that gave them those Scriptures and decided what the canon would be.

What would be proof to you? A list of everyone? Or a number of sources (non-catholic) who site the same numbers within a thousand? What is the relevance of debating the number when it’s clear that there is an extraordinary amount?
