Can These Thoughts Be Mortal Sins?

I too have struggled with certain “thoughts.” For some time they were immoral. They would just pop into my head and I would quickly start saying a Hail Mary or an Our Father. I always pray the Saint Michael prayer as this is an exorcism prayer. Also, although we do not want to be scrupulous we also do not want these thoughts to take us over…which they can do if we do not fight them. I went to confession once a week and would confess these each and every time. I realized I was not being held accountable for these sins but that my priest could help me through them. By confessing these thoughts and promising God I would do my best to drive them away(with His help) I was able to do so. For the most part I no longer struggle with this. Every now and then impure thoughts come into my mind but not at all like they used to. Pretty soon the devil will realize he has NO hold over you! Praise Jesus!

🙂 A little prayer here and there really makes a difference. I’ll keep checking that scrupulous page.

I have had the same problem in general for quite some time. There have been times when “Understanding Scrupulosity” by Father Santa has been a lifeline.

I also, however, try to go to confession regularly and confess these things. The reason is two-fold: first, because in my particular case I used to live a fairly wicked life, and let’s face it, when you roll in the mud you get dirty. Some effects of sin in our hearts take longer than others to resolve, and few of us are walking saints. I want to make absolutely sure that these things do not come from my own heart. If so, the Holy Spirit in His mercy not only forgive us but gives the grace to overcome them.

Second, it gives me an opportunity to receive guidance from the priest, who has been given his ministry by God. I have been fortunate and have been blessed with two wonderful priests who have the patience (and sometimes it’s needed) and compassion to help me.

Over time, the struggle has become less severe, but I still have bad days.

Thank you to all those who have posted here…you all contribute something unique and each is performing an act of spiritual mercy. God bless all you guys (and gals)!

The best cure to blasphemous thoughts is to use the temptation as a means to praise God. When the evil behind it, realises it is unwittingly causing you to praise God, it will depart very quickely trust me.

I once suffered with horrible thoughts regarding the Blessed Virgin. I combated them by using the following formula:

In all things may the most holy the most just and the most lovable will of God be done praised and exhalted above all for ever. I sang it and even said it out loud if I was in a private place.

Praising God sorted it out. They were pretty persistent till then, praise sent it packing.👍
