Can we accept transgenders?

Hi,
I’m a 44 year old woman watching the Bruce Jenner interview live here in Australia (yes, it’s that much of a news story over here too)
I don’t understand the desire to change genders.
As a Catholic, am I allowed to accept transgenders? Am I allowed to support them?
Or am I meant to tell them it’s wrong?
I want to be helpful to them and kind, but also not go against God’s teachings.
How do I express an opinion on it when people talk about Bruce Jenner?
