Hi,

I know that we are disciples of christ as we share his joy and suffering and follow his teaching. Can we call ourselves Apostles? If we agree and follow the apostles creed. Or is being an apostle still only for a few or for ordained religious? What defines an apostle today?

Thanks,
-EM

Christ chose 12 specific men to be His apostles.

They were given the responsibility of preaching the Gospel and all except one, became a martyr.

We have not been chosen for this task, and neither are we held to the level of responsibility that the Apostles and their successors are.

So, we take our place a His disciples and humbly submit our obedience to those He has chosen to be our shepherds.

By shepherds, do you mean priests and religious?

The word apostle means “one who is sent.” Christ chose the original twelve Apostles. In broad sense, anyone who is sent on a mission by Christ’s church is an apostle.
