Can we do this

can we use cesures and incense at home. i dunno i have seen online alot censures and sacramental incense that one can buy for personal use. I personaly would never buy it cause i believe it is something that should be saved for mass/divine liturgy. but could we in our personal households use censures and incense and not offened church or traditional law:highprayer: .

Of course it is a sacramental, I like the smell.

Of course-I burn incense when i pray the Hours

Where have you seen it on sale - I want some.

And not the cheap joss-stick kind of incense either!
 
I use incense at home…I had purchased a few months back some incense (“Gloria” brand made in Italy) like they use in church but beware of those “self-lighting charcoal bits” that’s used with the incense…the sparks from the charcoal fly all over the place. :eek: And I was using a censer… even so…from the openings on the upper part of the censer the sparks were coming out and I had to take the censer to the kitchen and put it out. 😦

If there is any other way to get a continual burn to keep the incense smoking then I’d love to know about it… After my euphoria at wanting the “church incense” experience:highprayer: and the scary results…I am back to using “cone incense”…😛

I also use incense on a regular basis. Our homes are domestic churches and should be treated as such.

For some of the good stuff, I recommend

Holy Transfiguration Monastery
or
Mount Sinai Monastery

Mount Sinai has Shoyeido charcoal which doesn’t spark like the self-lighting charcoal does. It also uses less charcoal to burn longer. You can place a ceramic tile under the censor if you are concerned about sparks. Some people also like to light them outside. Wait until the charcoal has turned white on top, then place a few grains of incense on top of the charcoal.

Most people can also pick up good quality frankincense incense from their local Greek, Arabic, or Middle Eastern grocery store.
 
Okay, so we can use incense (like during the Hours) but HOW does one use it? Can one use a swinging censor and swing it like we see at Mass (i.e., 3 sets of 3 swings at images of our Lord, 3 sets of 2 at our Lady, 3 sets of 1 at other images?) during the hymn or does one just place the incense on the coal and let it burn?

Also, how about before and after praying the Rosary?
 
CAUTION

Use charcoal only in a well ventilated area. I keep a window open. It generates a lot of CO which is lethal in fairly small concentrations.
 
many health food stores also carry pure resin frankincense “tears”, as they are called.
 
I think incense is great if you’re not allergic to it. It … well … makes the roof of my mouth itch. I try very very hard not to clear my mouth our cough during Mass if its used – because Father lectured us about how rude it is to cough when he uses incense – but sometimes I can’t help it! I really am allergic.

You can use it at home though.

I don’t use it personally, for personal reasons. LOL!!!

I have a stationary censer (not the swinging kind). I light the charcoal outside because of the sparks. Once these have stopped I bring the censer in and set it on a ceramic coaster. When I am about ready to begin I put some incense on top of the charcoal, partially close the censer lid and let 'er go!

One other thing… I put a layer of sand at the bottom of the censer and place the charcoal on top of it. It acts as an insulator and prevents the censer from getting quite as hot as it might otherwise.

As for when to use it- I use it for the Hours mostly, but you could use it whenever you wish.

You may cense icons or images you have, your family members, your house (the rooms, the doors, etc), your bed before you go to sleep, or anything else you wish to bless or honor.

Three puffs in the sign of the cross is a good way of using the hand censor, but there is no right and wrong.
 
Oddly enough, I found this thread looking for cone incense on google, that smelled like that used in Mass.

From the reaction here, I am surprized someone doesn’t offer cone or stick for home use. GF
