Can we drink coffee before Holy Communion?

Is coffee considered a beverage or medication in the 1 HR fast before Holy Communion? Years ago, a Deacon asked a priest who was drinking coffee in between Masses. He asked him about the 1 HR fast, and reported to me that the priest told him it was like a medication. This is more of an issue before daily Mass, but 6 AM is a temptiing time to see coffee as a med. Is there an official rule?
