Tepo,I couldnt help myself from swaying back and forth during the Our Father last Sunday out of pure sarcasm because it just seemed soooo sloooow and quite frankly, a little cheesy
While I can certainly sympathize with your experience, we should remember what our job is at Mass. As they used to say but fail to teach correctly now, we aren’t simply attending like attending a movie, we are “assisting at Mass”. Part of that , I believe, is a respectful participation. I too have endured many, many horrible unsingable songs week after week. Songs I KNOW no one else knew either. It is like the choir is trying to beat its own personal challenge. One of the ways to handle this is to go to your DRE or whoever handles the liturgy music in your parish and ask about different arrangements SOME of the time for the Our Father. This was a helpful way for me to get some more familiar songs during Mass.
However, even when the songs are awful, it is my job to open my mouth and try to sing them. The Mass is the highest form of prayer we have this side of Heaven. Almighty God, Jesus Christ, condescends to become bread for us. I believe that we can sing and stand still and remain reverent in thought and action for Him for at least 45-1 hour while we re- enact his Crucifiction and Death for us.
God Bless,
Maria
