Can we marry each other a second time in the Catholic Church?

I was wondering if anyone had information on the ‘rules’ regarding second marriages in the Catholic Church. I was first married 10 years ago in the Catholic Church. We later divorced and 5 years later we are dating again. We have been dating for 3 years and have began to talk about a second marriage. Would it be possible for us to be remarried in the catholic church?

Hi,

As far as the Catholic Church is concerned you have been married for ten years. No state has the power to dissolve what God has joined together. You may want to be married civilly for legal reasons, but you are entitled to live as man and wife right now. You may want to renew your vows at Mass as people do on certain anniversaries, but it would not be a sacrament since are already living the sacrament. I suggest that you read “Good News About Sex and Marriage” by Christopher West, available through shop.catholic.com. It explains all the teachings of the Church regarding marriage in a very up-lifting way.
