Can we receive Communion given the status of our marriage?

Just over a year ago, my wife (a lifelong Catholic) and I were married by a Justice of the Peace in the local town hall. About 10 months after the marriage, I completed my RCIA and became a converted member of the Catholic Church.

My question is this: Can my wife and I receive the Eucharist at Mass, or do we have to “fix” or have the marriage recognized by the church first?

Any help that can be provided would be deeply appreciated.
